I'm always up for a good deli. This is as east coast deli as it gets. Probably the best in the area. They have hot food, cold food, and a small market. The hot sandwiches steal the show. I ordered the chicken parm sandwich, it was steaming hot. I would've liked more cheese in mine, but delicious nonetheless. The sauce stole the show. It was flavorful and fragrant. I loved it. I asked the lady what the difference was between Mario's combo and the Italian coldcut sandwich, and she said it was the same. I'm not sure which one I ended up getting, but it had an extra piece of bread in the middle. Too much bread, it was unnecessary. The cold sandwich was not as good as the hot. Eagle Rock Bakery and Bay Cities makes a better cold sub hands down. Not even close. But this is serviceable. It's still better than any other chain store. They do use a yellow mayo, which I'm sure has mustard mixed into it. I prefer it separated. I'm also not sure if they add oil and vinegar, which should be standard in an Italian sub. Mine didn't have the kick and bite of good vinegar. Lastly, I need to review the bread, which is the one thing all delis need to be judged by. The truest example of east coast deli bread here in L.A. is Bay Cities. If it's not the firm, chewy, heavy, hearty dough with a crisp exterior, it's not authentic. This is where Mario's subs pale in comparison. The bread is too light and soft. Its right in between a Subway roll and a real Italian roll should be. I have a feeling a lot of people probably prefer this, because it is easier to eat and tear into. The problem with the real bread is sometimes you bite down and it's so firm and dense the innards squirt out the sides. You won't have that problem here. I did feel that my chicken parm sub would get soggy if I hadn't eaten it there and then. Anyways, nit picking at this point. Summary:. The food is really good, and I can't wait to try the other hot sandwiches and potato salad next time! Definitely...
Read moreI’m giving the service 1 star because of what happened today granted we also were at fault but we felt taken advantage of. We came in to order food but also to ask how much a tray would be as we are mourning the death of a family member. After giving us options on some sandwiches and get recommendations we agree to a tray because we had family waiting and also there was a lot people it was very rushed. I asked please tell me what the order amount will be before they start making them I asked her twice and I feel at this point she just took advantage of the fact that we needed them to go And she said I’ll let you know after I’m done. In my mind I said it shouldn’t be a lot (which was where we made a mistake) we sat down to eat two sandwiches while we waited since we hadn’t had anything to eat in two days while we were in the hospital. When they ring us up she said it was $240 dollars. We kind of were in shock and minus the what we ate was $180. I then told her this is why you let someone know how much the total is before something is made had we known It was gonna cost us $180 we would have declined and went somewhere else. My mom had difficulties then with the card we were given from a family member to pay and so we said I needed to go back and get my own card to get money transferred but that we’d pay for the two sandwiches and two sodas we already ate. They looked at us like and rolled their eyes and told we had to leave a card behind and when we paid we’d get it back. Ridiculous and we will not be coming back. We ended getting my card and paying after and taking the sandwiches of course. The fact that one they were upset that we didn’t know the price after we asked twice! And then are in shock that we didn’t want the sandwiches , we just had someone die and we are paying for a funeral $180 would have been out of the question if we would have been told that from the start. A lesson learned from us as well and will not be coming back...
Read moreCame here for a quick lunch sandwich (3:45pm)since my boyfriend and I were in the area. Walked in, took a number and proceeded to look at menu. One lady called our number to take order, but told her we just walked in and was looking at the menu. The menu board was all over the place so I looked online and decide on the Caprese Salad ($5.99)which contained (from online menu) “Fresh mozzarella, cherry tomato with basil, balsamic vinegar & olive oil”. My boyfriend decided on the cold pastrami sandwich. We approached the counter & waited about 7 minutes to order but no one acknowledged us untiI I said we’re ready to order. Gave her my order for the Caprese Salad and she repeated it to me and asked what size. I was a little confused and thrown off because usually there isn’t a (half pint/pint) size for a Caprese salad, (figured they packaged it differently), so told her half pint. My boyfriend orders the Pastrami (cashier was snappy with response “cold, hot?”) and we wait for our order. About 5 minutes later, two of the workers present a pint of what appears to be PASTA salad almost full and tells me that they were giving me more than half a pint because that what was left and asked if I wanted it. Still thrown off by this “Caprese Salad” that was being handed to me, I said yes. We paid for our food & sat outside. The receipt didn’t itemize our order, just prices which I was charged double for not what I ordered. I tasted what I paid for and it was ok, definitely had better. Boyfriend’s sandwich was ok as well. Not sure if they were trying to rush us out because it was nearing closing time, just was not a...
