I liked this place, and found the staff friendly.
If you're looking for a fancy or hip place, go elsewhere. This is more like a takeout place that has 4 or 5 tables. But, it was exactly the type of place this New Yorker was looking for when eating on my own on a recent road trip. It seemed like other reviews here were expecting too much and simply chose the wrong place, so I decided to write this review.
I ordered their tangerine chicken (what I normally call orange chicken) and white rice. Since it's such a small place, the food comes out piping hot. It was delivered to my table before I paid.
The dish was tasty, and left a slight spicy hotness after eating, all good. The vegetables seemed fresh as well, and a decent sized portion of white rice. It's served on take-out containers, paper plates, and plastic ware (yeah, get over it, this works fine).
I was there when it started to rain, and the older guy there (I assume owner) was nice enough to tell another customer he left his window open. I had purchased a drink I half finished, and I didn't want to dump half a Monster can in their trash and told the owner I was leaving it. His response was "you can stay, finish it, no rush". While that goes without saying, I think it was nice of him to invite me to stay.
Again, if you're looking to impress a first date with a restaurant, I wouldn't pick this place. But I would have no problem coming here on my own, with friends, or family, and having a cheap meal over good...
Read moreI had been getting food here for over the last 15 years. Food quality has gone down over the years, and so has the service. I have lived in Great Barrington most of my life, and my last experience at this restaurant will be my last ever! I ordered food for My girlfriend and myself,(we were told it would be ready in 10min) when we showed up at the Wall to pick up our food(12 minutes later), The lady working took part of our order which was ready for pickup, and sold it to the guy in front of us, right in front of my face, while we were standing inline. She then tried to say that our food wasn't ready yet, and it would just be another minute. I then see her start recooking my food because she just sold it to the guy in front of us. mean while all our other food is just sitting there getting cold. We had to wait almost 10 minutes while my food was maid. I have never had this happen before. When I called her out on doing it she said she was sorry and that it wouldn't ever happen again. which means she did do exactly that. this is by far one of the worst experiences I have ever had in a restaurant. I will be sure to share my experience with family and friends. Not a good way to do business, especially to locals! Not to mention once we actually got the food it was not good, my girlfriends mixed greens was missing most of the usual vegies, and my pork was not cooked well, and the rice was...
Read moreGreat Wall is the best Chinese takeout restaurant in the Berkshires, by far. The food is so good that we drive up from Connecticut, 45 minutes, to get it, or we stop by to pick it up when returning from ski trips up north. Unlike many Chinese restaurants, everything served here is made fresh the day it is to be served. Do a pickup before noon and see for yourself - the kitchen is stacked with fresh vegetable crates and the taste and texture of the prepared vegetables = proof that it's fresh. We have probably ordered about half the menu over the last 5 years and not a single dish has disappointed. Not one.
I'm not sure why their reviews are not higher but in reading them, some people seem to think that this is a sit-down restaurant - it's really not although they do have a few tables if you need to eat there. Also, claims that they change the menu randomly or they jack their prices? Never experienced any of that.
Ignore the negative reviews and give it a try for yourself - it's well worth your...
