My wife and I finally had a chance to stop in for dinner at Madrid this past week, and we were really looking forward to coming in as we are big fans of Spanish food in general. Madrid's is a small, cozy, well appointed restaurant with no parking area (park on the street or in the ramp right next to it). It is beautifully decorated inside, quiet with a really nice bar area and a bunch of tables against the opposite wall.
As we sat down, we were given both the wine and tapas menu. The wine menu is very nice, with a moderate amount of wines in all price categories. It's nice to see such a well thought out selection of wines! The wines ranged from by the glass (house and a good selection of others) for $6-$13, to bottles from $28-$200. You could tell that the owners put some thought into their selection.
We started with some vermouth, which just happened to be the same brand that we bring back from Spain with us each time we go. It was served a little differently in a Sherry glass instead of in a tumbler with ice and an orange peel, but good none the less. After the vermouth we each had a different glass excellent Rioja, and both went very well with our food.
As for the food, it is served tapas style (small plates to share), so be prepared to order a bunch and they come out as finished (as they should), so you may want to order a few, wait, and then order more. We ordered the pan tomate, seafood tapas size paella, asada pulpo, lavender carne asada, lettuce hearts, and tuna tartare. This was a perfect amount of food for two hungry people. All of the food was well seasoned, with a nice touch of salt added to finish the dish.
The tuna tartare was excellent, served with perfectly ripe avocado, nice olive oil, and nicely peppery arugula. Unfortunately, each of the other dishes fell a bit flat, and each had some issues. The pan tomate was made with some wonderful tasting bread, but we got no fresh tomato or olive oil taste but of it.
The asada pulpo, which we were really looking forward to, had a nice mashed potatoes and olive oil sauce, but was oddly mushy in the outside while being stringy on the inside. The actual paella in the seafood paella was good - well seasoned and well prepared, but not overally fresh. With the dish, you receive two shrimp, two mussels and some octopus. The shrimp were good and cooked perfectly, the octopus had the same strange texture as the pulpo dish, and the mussels were just plain horrible - tough, stringy and tasted old.
The lavendar carne asada was well prepared and served on some very tasty bread. The lavendar was a touch heavy for our tastes, but it was still a good dish and something different. The lettuce hearts with blue cheese mousse were okay. We liked the blue cheese, but the lettuce was warm and a bit wilted.
The service was polite, courteous, and attentive with a good knowledge of menu.
Overall, Madrid's is a place we will come back to try for some pre-dinner drinks, and maybe a tapas or two, but we left feeling underwhelmed. We thought the quality of food did not match the price being charged and that the food itself was average at best; however we really liked the wine selection and ambiance...
Read moreOWNER WAS VAPING HER NICOTINE DEVICE AND BLOWING IT OVER OUR FOOD WHILE IT WAS COOKING!! I don’t normally leave reviews but this place needs to have something done.
First impression walking in and sitting at the bar. The stools were so dirty and the counter was full of random things including a dirty lime press that looked like it’s never been cleaned in it’s life. Ordered a drink and my glass had previous lipstick marks on it.
We had a large group with reservations weeks in advance. They were out of almost everything and the owner was extremely overwhelmed of us being there. She took half the tables order and stopped because she needed to start cooking. We were there for 3 hours waiting for food total.
The waitress accidentally gave us another tables cashews that no one claimed. Then the owner yelled at her right in front of us! She then charged us for them on the bill.
The owner had a sleeveless dress on with her bra hanging out and wearing flip flops. Both you are not allowed to do while cooking and handling food. She never wore gloves and was touching her cooks sweaty hair and pulling it back and never washed her hands afterwards. SHE WAS ALSO VAPING HER NICOTINE DEVICE WHILE COOKING OUR FOOD. This places is disgusting and I don’t know how they’re not shut down for health code violations all over the place. There was also some big moldy thing sitting in the sink the whole time.
THE BILL. The owner charged us for 5 potatoes when we only ordered 3. She also charged us for the cashews that they accidentally gave to us.
We WAITED 45 mins for the last girl in our group to get her food after we were all done. We asked what was going on and the owner was SO RUDE. The list goes on. Unbelievable service and so so dirty. Super pricey for not a lot of food. I hate to leave a bad review but people need to be aware...
Read moreI wish I could leave a better review, sadly a wonderful evening was ruined. The food smelt delicious upon arrival. Our group was excited to try some tapas and have a couple cocktails. As there were 9 of us, we asked if we could get pitchers instead of individual drinks. I asked our server how many drinks come in a pitcher, he responded 4. We ordered 3 pitchers, one with sangria, one with margaritas, and one with mojitos. They were good drinks, the bartender even grabbed fresh mint from the garden next to where we were sitting out in the alleyway. We ordered food, and were having a good time. That is until our server took away our empty pitchers and decided to add another round to our table. We explained we never ordered the pitchers and the server responded with a laugh as he walked away. You would think it's not a big deal, until you received your bill at the end of the evening. 6 pitchers at $65 dollars apiece leads to an outrageous bar tab especially considering their drinks are 8 dollars each. Simply put, ~4 drinks x $8 does not equal $65. And when you consider we were charged $195 worth of alcohol that we didn't even order, it makes you quite upset. The staff and owner were not willing to budge on price and even claimed their were 10 drinks in each pitcher. I can assure you it was closer to 3. I will never go back, and really wonder how many times this deceivment has gone on to unexpecting parties. It's a shame really, you had potential, but treating your customers this way is insulting, and leads to a...
