Positive experience but skip to bottom to see why I won’t return — I arrived at noon on a Saturday for brunch as my date chose here. I had been here before for a Yelp Event. I was excited to see what brunch would be like. Once inside, we were promptly seated.
Service: 5/5 -At 12:02, Sarah came over to start us off & brought us waters. She said that our waiter was doing something & would be with us. She planned to take our drink orders but we weren’t ready. -Our waiter, Johlaun, came at 12:09. He gave a spill about the restaurant $ how things are cooked & prepared, noting everything is made fresh, which may result in delayed timing for food. -We ordered mimosa flight at 12:11 with orange juice, pineapple, blood orange, & cranberry. It came at 12:17 -At 12:27, waiter brought over complimentary muffins -We ordered entrees when mimosas arrived. I got the hen & bread w/ a side of hashbrowns. My date got the chicken biscuit w/ a side of grits. The entrees came at 12:52; on 35 minutes after ordering. -After we paid & got containers, I wanted a to go cup. I didn’t see our waiter so I stopped Sarah who cheerfully got me one. I must note that Sarah was SO FRIENDLY & welcoming. Her attitude, helpfulness, and vibes were so amazing!
Food Quality/Taste: 4/5 -Muffins: They were tasty & had a small crunch to them, which wasn’t bad, even though I was initially expecting it to be soft. -Mimosas: They were tasty with a good balance of juice & champagne -Hen + Bread: I was hesitant about this since the chicken is marinated in Texas Pete & I’m not a hot sauce guy. While the chicken wasn’t spicy, I could taste the Texas Pete. It wasn’t overwhelming but noticeable. The honey glaze on top was nice & helped to offset the Texas Pete. I wished the chicken was a crisper than what it was. No complaints with the waffle. -Biscuit & Grits: My date enjoyed their food w/ no complaints. They said it was “great”. -Hashbrowns: They were delicious, both dipped in ketchup & without.
Presentation: 4/5 -Mimosa flight: They came on a nice board with labels; Most places don’t do this, so it was great. -Muffins: Small, crisp top, with powdered sugar; After we both ate one, we noticed a piece of hair on the plate. I looked back at the picture I took & noticed it was there BEFORE we grabbed one. I opted not to bring to attention of waiter since it was complimentary as wasn’t directly touching the muffins. Regardless, it was not a pleasant sight. -Hashbrowns: Presented as breakfast potatoes, but it was fine. It was a generous portion. -Entrees: Plated averagely
Ambiance & Cleanliness: 5/5 -It was an inviting atmosphere; well-decorated and clean -The chairs are different & w/ some not comfy. My original chair was very uncomfortable & I asked to switch it. My request was granted. -The music selection was great. It could’ve been turned up a couple notches though. -Restrooms are for anyone; The door can lock for privacy. The restrooms were clean & smelled nice.
Value for Money: 4/5 -The mimosa flight was $16. That was expensive for the small amount of mimosa we got, in my opinion -The size of the biscuit ($17) & grits ($7) was HUGE! However, it was a $3 up-charge to simply add cheese to the grits… -I saw a waitress take a pancake to another take it was also HUGE. -I think a side should be included with the entrees, even if that means slightly increasing the price of entree -Overall, we actually didn’t finish because we got full.
Overall Experience: 4/5 -Pretty good experience. The cocktails are little pricey & the hair on the plate was not good. The staff were friendly w/ good food. I would’ve liked to return but will not be (see below) =26/30
— I was disappointed to see the owner, Tara, responding to customers reviews defensively & unprofessionally. As a Yelp Elite & Google Reviewer, I support local businesses, but I cant support one that handles feedback this way. These were missed opportunities to make things right. If I saw the responses earlier, I wouldve told my date to pick elsewhere. Tara, please work on...
Read moreI was finally able to bring my family for brunch after having to reschedule from last weekend's opening due to a lack of supplies from a successful and busy opening night! Was very excited since the mishap allowed me to meet the owner of the restaurant when we had checked in before, not knowing that she'd emailed about the cancellation. Very friendly lady with a bunch of adorable young kids!
Today, we rolled in for our 10:45 am reservation for brunch and immediately led us outside. I'm accustomed to being asked if it's a preference to dine in or out, so it was a little unusual for me. Since we were wearing sweaters, I thought that the 60-degree day would be alright for my hubby, toddler, and I and went along with it. Unfortunately, the sun was very harsh and we were sitting directly in it. My daughter became very uncomfortable with that, and I had to move her from her high chair so that she could sit in the shade I was casting next to me. After trying to open the umbrella next to us, we were told we could not because there were no sandbags to hold them down and it would be blown away. Had we known ahead of time, I wish we'd been given indoor seating where it seemed like there was adequate space at the time.
We started with the Corned Beef Hash which is their in-house corned beef , over crispy potatoes and two eggs over-easy (gf & df) on top. All three of us easily enjoyed this the most. There's always something comforting about a well-executed over-easy egg on top of anything and this was no exception.
I was a little surprised that there were limitations to the already limited brunch menu in that there were no sous vide egg bites, quiche, and I want to say sweet potato muffins (but not 100% on that) available. Hubby was most excited about quiche so that was a bit of a bummer, so he switched to the steak and cheese omelet. I was able to try a bite and it was very tasty. The egg wasn't overcooked and the blend of cheese with tender pieces of meat was delicious.
For our daughter, we ordered fresh fruits which were a bit sparse on portion size compared to some other restaurants along the street, but she enjoyed the pears and oranges. I had also ordered the turtle toast to split with her in the instance she had a bigger appetite and it was absolutely delicious. It was the perfect blend of crispy and fluffy I've had in a while where you could enjoy a crispy toast without the sensation it was burned. Combined with chocolate ganache and caramel, it was a heavenly treat.
And lastly, for me, I chose a chicken biscuit to which the waitress was enthusiastic about. Told me that was a good choice, and it sure was! It was fried in a way where the oil that covered it didn't leave me feeling weighed down and the biscuit was buttery and soft. Paired with aged cheddar and bacon, this was a great combo!
All in all, we had a great experience. The food was great and I'd like to try dinner sometime. Hopefully, the outside sitting area will also be more readily prepared to offer shade since the majority of the space is...
Read moreVery delicious experience! Went here for my granddaughter's graduation celebration. My son-in-love made the reservation for 11 a month before. He explained that he could not find a place large enough for our family. The reservation changed to 14 within 2 weeks and they still said yes we have room. Having my mom, children and most of my grandchildren at the same table is a feat and usually takes 2 tables so cudos for the comfortable atmosphere with succulent plants everywhere.
I looked up the gluten free menu a week before and I was able to call and discuss the odds of cross contamination with the manager. I read complaints about them having a limited option of gluten-free food but they have a small menu period so it is portioned aptly. Speaking of portions 🤯 The amount was so much that for some options the plate could not fit it all! Everything looked beautiful and appetizing.
I decided before going that I would have the GF pancake but after the long graduation and our arrival time that option was no longer available. The waitress, sweet young lady, suggested shrimp and grit cake. I saw this and thought it would be good but I assumed the sausage in it was andouille which is not GF but it was regular crumbled sausage. I opted for this selection and was pleasantly surprised! I also had a problem with my ginger ale which was all seltzer. The sweet young lady switched it out for some n/a ginger beer which I never had before but I liked it. I loved my shrimp and grits and the upscale beauty did not go unnoticed but I did not take a photo because I was starving 😆. My granddaughter took a photo of her hen and bread (my daughter said that this was gentrified children and waffles) I will share with you. My pescatarian granddaughter was also limited in her options but her pancake, yes only one, took over the whole plate and looked divine! My son and grandson had chicken and biscuit and neither could pick it up to eat because it was so huge! Not one complaint from my family is a huge deal!
Now I heard that the bathrooms were confusing as they had dinosaur symbols but not gender specific.
We will be back in 2027 when my second granddaughter graduates from NCGU. Or maybe I'll stop in to visit when we have our playdates during the semester. I've got to try that GF pancake!
Side note my granddaughter looked up their IG page and gave us the history and background of the family owned small...
