The Marriott in Downtown Greensboro is in need of some maintenance. I do like the location of this hotel and the M Lounge (when it is open) and restaurant staff but will look for an alternative Greensboro hotel in the future.
The ongoing problems started when I could not get the room door to open on my first assigned room. The sensor opened the door but the handle wouldn't get me in. So the front desk had the valet and not maintenance assist me and he was able to get in with the master key. He blamed the change in temperature for the indoor doors swelling. I was told to pull the door back and push down on the handle very forcefully but after several tries I couldn't get the door to open. A room I cannot open the door to is a problem.
So I then asked to be moved. I was moved to a small, handicap accessible room (which was not the room type I reserved). As a Titanium member I am to get tye room type I reserved. I could see at the door map the size of the other rooms and having stayed here countless times I knew this room was very tight with the beds and you couldn't get around one side of either of them. The table and chair as well as a tall lamp were also not in the room as there was no space. So I was downgraded because the first room I was given either had a misaligned door or it was warped but it was not my fault that It was not operating properly.
On my previous stay December into January, on check-out day, at least three hours before checkout, housekeeping just walked in my room. I had the do not disturb sign up so I found that inappropriate but made note to keep the safety latch on after that.
So on this stay, on my second day, a little before 4pm, I was shocked housekeeping tried to enter my room again. The do not disturb sign was on the door. This time the safety latch prevented the door from opening further than a few inches. There had been no knock either time and no apology either time. This time they woke me up from my nap.
My downgraded room was also a connected room. So about 30 minutes after housekeeping tried to enter my room from the main door, someone else tried to enter the room from the connecting door. This made me uneasy that so many were trying to access my room without any explanation. I had a two night reservation. If there was an issue and they needed access to the room, why not call and ask or just knock on the door?
The hotel's priority should be the safety of the guests. The front desk did inform me that housekeeping was not to enter with the do not disturb sign but it doesn't seem that housekeeping understands this.
I thought that was the end of the problems, but there is more. When I went to turn on the water in the shower, I discovered the handle was not attached and it came right off. I'm not sure if they forgot the glue (epoxy) or just failed to put the screw into it.
Then when I took a wash cloth from the sink, I wondered why it was wet. I saw that the base of the sink faucet was leaking. The hotel doesn't seem to be getting maintenance or the workers are just cutting corners. Whoever is inspecting the rooms or the work isn't doing their job.
This was an eventful stay but not in a good way. You'd think they would treat someone who has stayed at the hotel multiple times a year for the last few years would be treated better. I recommend...
Read moreFirst off, let me just say that if you’re not conducting business in this hotel or within walking distance, there’s absolutely no reason to stay at this property. There is absolutely nothing to do and nothing close by in terms of restaurants, coffee shops, etc. It’s just a barren concrete blah, ugly neighborhood with nothing going on, and I mean nothing—maybe the demolition of an old parking garage, but that’s about it.
Now, I will say the lobby area, bar space, breakfast restaurant, and the M Club have had a nice remodel with basic low-end Marriott finishes—nothing spectacular or above average here. The elevators are old and outdated, taking forever to get from the first to the 11th floor. God forbid you’re staying on the top floor; you’ll spend half your stay in the elevator. There’s no key swipe, so it’s not a secured elevator, which serves as a reminder that this hotel is very old, including the old doors, very narrow entries, and very tiny bathrooms that are lit with super bright, surgery-type operating room lighting. The bulbs over the shower are a different type—super bright vapor, low-budget lightbulbs in the bedroom that are so bright they would be better suited in a junkyard or maybe even Walmart.
The air vents in the room are so disgusting. They have growth on them from mold and dust like you would not believe—they actually look like some sort of sponge. (See photos for this.) The rooms are old, the kind with popcorn ceilings and painted walls that are mismatched from when they prepped and repaired holes in the walls or had to break the door in for a lockout. There are very low ceilings and a very average renovation package with just the furnishings plopped into an old room with old paint, old ceilings, cracks, holes in the wall, damaged drywall, and dirty toilets with gold rings around them (and it’s not from hard water).
Beds are somewhat comfortable, but this hotel has very few king-size beds, so you’ll probably be stuck in a room with two smaller twin or queen beds, which are very tight. On the bright side, I’ll give a compliment where it’s due: the shower pressure is good, and I did enjoy the shower. Too bad the bathroom lighting is so horrific; it makes your face look like death. It’s so bright white and disturbing.
From my experience, on both sides of the hotel, there are no real good sides for views, but the views are better in rooms that are even-numbered. For example, 1032 would be better than 1031 in terms of a view, but remember, there’s not much of a view; I’m just saying it’s better than the other side of the hallway, and you may catch a decent sunset.
The front desk staff is friendly, but that’s pushing it. The bartenders were okay, but they could have a little more energy. Overall, this is a very average Marriott hotel that I would not stay at again if I found myself in the area. This is one town I would probably choose to opt out of any Marriott properties and go with a more boutique hotel or perhaps the Wyndham, which has a nicer property here. Self parking is $18 per day convenient to lobby. This hotel does not offer valet parking. There’s a seven story parking garage adjacent...

I stayed at the Marriott Greensboro Downtown on the night of April 27th with my 10-year-old daughter. She had a gymnastics meet the next morning, so we planned to get to bed early. Unfortunately, our experience was anything but restful—and left me deeply concerned for our safety.
Around 9 PM, we discovered the floor in front of the bathroom was soaking wet. We looked up and saw that the ceiling was leaking. I called the front desk to report it, and they immediately sent someone from maintenance. What shocked me was how quickly they identified the problem—they knew exactly where the leak was coming from, suggesting this wasn’t a new issue. In fact, the ceiling even looked like it had been patched or had leaked before.
The maintenance person told us the issue was “fixed,” wiped the water, took the soaked towel, and left. There was no warning that the leak might continue or any advice to keep the floor dry just in case. We trusted the situation was handled.
Then, in the middle of the night, I got up to use the bathroom and slipped on a puddle of water that had formed again on the tile. I fell hard. All I could think about was: What if my daughter had been the one to get up and slipped? She could’ve easily broken a bone or worse. This was incredibly dangerous and absolutely preventable.
This wasn’t an accident—it was negligence. The hotel was not fully booked, and they knowingly gave us a room with a recurring leak. They offered no warning, no room change, and no follow-up. When we reported the fall, we were told a manager would contact us. It’s now been three days and no one has called, despite us leaving multiple messages.
This experience left me angry, frustrated, and incredibly disappointed. The safety of your guests should be a priority. If you’re reading this and considering a stay, I urge you to think twice. And if you’re ever assigned room 837—demand another room...
