So, I have been to Gyu-Kaku in the past at other locations (even some outside the U.S./ mainland).
This was the first Gyu-Kaku I've been to in the U.S. and we traveled about 2 hours to visit this location for my friends birthday. He and his wife are from China, so I thought it would be a nice, welcomed experience. I also brought my other friend and his girlfriend, who spent a lot of time living in China and Japan.
That said, the atmosphere was very welcoming, entertaining, and similar to the other locations I've visited.
The experience of joining your friends in cooking your own food yakiniku style is also SO MUCH FUN! The food was very good however, they didn't have many of the cuts (offal - animal organs) I have typically seen at other locations which I thoroughly enjoy (I'm not your average American, lol). The Japanese word(s) are horumon, honba (肺) and motsu (モツ). in Chinese, it's Dòngwù qìguān/ Zang-Fu. I have always been a big fan of heart ❤️, tongue 😜, liver, kidney, lung🫁, gizzards, stomach, intestines, brains 🧠 etc.!
THE SERVICE THOUGH.... this is where this location just dripped the ball on us.. Our waitress thatcevening was very nice amd accommodating but she didn't visit/ "touch the table" enough to make us feel she was really helping with much since we had 2 other waiters drop by our table to see of we needed anything which was nice of them. I know it's all about team players but when you are working for tips for a living amd you only have 3 tables in a not so busy restaurant, you should do everything in your power to make your guests/ clients feel ad welcome as your own family. That's the difference between a good and bad server as I waited tables and managed FOH amd BOH operations in restaurants for 20 years so I know the struggle of that life.. Doesn't mean your allowed to just take a day off at work though.
Crazy thing is, my table's bill was over $500 which at a whopping 25% tip (again I come from this profession so I always tip well, even to servers that don't really work for it) is $125 dollars.. Likely more than she made on every other tvake combined for her shift that day.
All I ask is that your servers acrually try to take care of your bigger bigger customers. I get it when someone comes in orders as cheap as possible with water and leaves 3 bucks on the table. I'm not that guy, and I expect better service next I visit due to the...
Read moreI wish I could say I had a great experience; however, we NEVER got the chance to sit down. They were so extremely overbooked on Valentine’s Day. We had a reservation for 9:30. We waited for 40 minutes IN LINE (to just check in) with everyone else who had 9:15/9:30 reservations. In line, the manager (obviously worried about bad reviews, as everyone was annoyed) announced that they were very very behind and she’d offer us all a free drink. My boyfriend and I, being 19 and 20, were at the very front and starving (we had one meal the entire day, as he had reserved us the all you can eat 90 minute meals). I call her attention and tell her we are underage. She laughs. at. me. as if I was asking for a drink (why would I do that, I’m literally informing her we’re not 21)- after she laughs, I say “I’m asking if we can have anything else on the house, since we aren’t of drinking age”. She asks me if we want apple juice and laughs again. This was extremely disrespectful. I couldn’t believe the nerve of this lady, who overbooked her own restaurant and made many many couples wait in a line to simply check in for their own reservations (almost an hour behind). Many people canceled right then and there, seeing the line, leaving them stranded on Valentine’s Day. We still wanted to talk to the front desk, to see the wait time. Once we got to the front, forty minutes later mind you after we got there, we ask what the wait will be. It’s around 10:10 at this point, and he says it’ll be an hour. I ask, when does the restaurant close, and he says 12, then says 11. I inform him how we bought the 90 minute ($120 total) meals and ask if we will get the full time, or if we’d have to leave after 30/40 minutes because of closing. He honestly, (I’m thankful he told us), says his manager will likely have us leave when they close, making us not even get half of the time we paid for. I cancel it then and there and we are left trying to find a place to eat on Valentine’s Day. My boyfriend had booked a week and a half in advance, and had been looking forward to this day for a long time. We ended up going to Wendy’s because of this restaurant’s terrible service, organization, and management. I am extremely disappointed and annoyed that this restaurant decided to take profit over literal planning. Will not be...
Read moreMy journey with Gyu Kaku began at the Charlotte, NC location, and ever since that memorable experience, I've been on a quest to find its branches wherever my travels take me. So when my 8-year-old son and I embarked on a weekend hiking trip from Wilmington, NC to Boone, NC, stopping at Gyu Kaku in Greensboro for dinner was a non-negotiable part of our itinerary.
This particular location pleasantly surprised me with its own parking lot, a rare convenience compared to the Charlotte spot. It's the little things that count, and this small detail made our visit even smoother.
Our waiter deserves a standing ovation! Attentive, friendly, and always at our beck and call, he elevated our dining experience to new heights. With a smile, he guided us through the menu and ensured we were well taken care of throughout our meal.
Opting for the all-you-can-eat option was a decision we didn't regret. Despite choosing the most budget-friendly tier, the selection of dishes was still impressive. We kicked off with the Spicy Addicting Cucumbers, a flavor explosion that set the tone for the feast ahead. Grilling our own food at the table added an interactive element to our dinner, making it not just a meal but an experience.
As we indulged in round after round of delectable beef and chicken items, the 90-minute time limit for the all-you-can-eat option proved to be both a challenge and a blessing. A quick restroom break halfway through allowed us to make room for more culinary delights (apologies to the toilet; it endured a humorous aftermath reminiscent of a certain scene from "Dumb and Dumber"!).
By the end of our gastronomic adventure, we were practically waddling out the door, our stomachs content and our hearts full. Gyu Kaku never disappoints, consistently delivering exceptional food and service that leave a lasting impression.
Whether you're a local or a traveler passing through, Gyu Kaku is a culinary gem waiting to be discovered. Trust me, your taste buds...
