Unexpected Delight at Elm Street Oyster House, Greenwich CT

Sometimes, the most unexpected detours lead to memorable experiences, and my serendipitous visit to Elm Street Oyster House in Greenwich, CT, was no exception. Originally en route to New Canaan, a flat tire and a subsequent two-hour wait at Mavis Tire Center presented an unforeseen predicament. Yet, what initially seemed like a dampener on my day transformed into an opportunity to explore Greenwich under the guise of a simple quest for a good meal.

Braving the 20-minute walk in the rain, I stumbled upon Elm Street Oyster House, a decision that turned my misfortune into a delightful escapade. The restaurant welcomed me with a cozy ambiance that was a much-needed respite from the cold rain outside. Opting for a mix of East Coast and West Coast oysters, I embarked on a culinary adventure that was both fresh and invigorating.

The highlight of my visit was not just the exquisite food but the warm and engaging service, particularly from a Brazilian server who was more than willing to share his rich experiences in Martha’s Vineyard. Our conversation was sparked by my curiosity about the Katama oysters on the menu, leading to a lively exchange about summer adventures in the Vineyard. It was this personal touch that elevated the dining experience, making me feel more like a guest than a customer.

Elm Street Oyster House proved to be more than just a place to eat; it was a sanctuary that offered solace and unexpected joy on a rainy day. The combination of fresh, delectable oysters and impeccable service made the walk through the rain utterly worth it. My visit to this charming establishment was a reminder that sometimes, it’s the unplanned moments that leave the most lasting impressions.

I eagerly look forward to my next visit to Elm Street Oyster House, a beacon of hospitality and culinary excellence in Greenwich, CT. Whether you find yourself stranded like I was, or you’re simply in search of a dining experience that combines great food with heartfelt conversations, this oyster house is a destination that should...

By some awful luck, we wound up in Greenwich, CT while on our way to a different part of the state. Amidst a sea of pampered, Lululemon-clad trad wives, we made our hungry way to Elm Street Oyster House for a seafood-focused lunch. The food was tasty, the service was friendly and I left feeling like I actually had something positive to say about the area (for once).

The special Pan Fried Oysters were the perfect garlicky and tomato-y start to take the edge off our rumbling stomachs. My main was the deeply satisfying Sweet & Spicy Arrabbiata, which came loaded with plump shrimp, juicy mussels and chewy calamari, over lots of al dente rigatoni with fresh basil. Exactly what I want to be enjoying on a warm, summer day. The special Clams and Chorizo in Wine Broth was equally satisfying, with lots of clams for what was billed as a brunch appetizer.

Prices were at Manhattan level, but with bigger portions, so there wasn't as much sticker shock. I don't see myself donning a pearl necklace or tying a J-Crew cardigan around my shoulders anytime soon, so I probably won't go out of my way to intentionally visit Greenwich again--but if I do accidentally wind up there again, I know where I'll...

We had a great meal and very attentive service. We were greeted and seated immediately. The glass of Gruner arrived crisp and cold just like I like it and my husband's IPA also arrived the same. The dozen west coast oysters had labels by them, I have never seen that and think it is so clever. The New England chowder was very hearty and who doesn't love an iceberg wedge and it came chopped! At this point it was time for another glass of wine for me and again it arrived so cold and a beautiful pour size. There were special tacos on the menu of the day which were so good. Another clever specialty Elm Street offers is - they have a list of fish, I chose bronzino, and you can have the chef prepare it in a variety of ways. For example scampi or maple bbq, the list is very thorough. Lastly we had the ravioli with shrimp. Saturday nights are always challenging to a restaurant staff and Elm...

The food here is fine, nothing spectacular but not bad either. The Atmosphere is very charming. The service was sub par. Our waitress ( Angelina) was disinterested in her duties the day we were there. It was fine, everyone had an off day. My problem is, I left a tip that indicated my displeasure with our service. $122 bill and a $20 tip. To me this wasn’t a great tip and I wanted her to know. What happened after is unconscionable, SOMEONE changed the tip amount to $35 dollars! I caught it in my credit card statement and had to dispute the charge. Of course you have to have proof, so I had to scour my car to find the receipt, which I would normally throw away. Be aware, do not throw your credit card receipts out and check your statement after leaving this restaurant!
