Tacos and Brews had very few customers tonight during the height of the dinner hour while area restaurants were absolutely full. We discovered why.
Unlike every other non fast food Mexican restaurant we've ever ever ever patronized, Tacos and Brews made us pay for chips and salsa. We ordered two entrees (3 tacos with side of black beans AND burrito with side of white rice with no flavor) and two softdrinks. Our bill was $42 before tip.
Although the food was good except for the chips we paid for which were no better anything I've taken out of a generic chip bag, the big problem was the way the server presented the "check." There was no breakdown of food cost or tax on her hand-held device. She simply gave us the total with the suggested tip options.
As we calculated and recalculated the price on the way home, we just don't see how $3.99 for chips & salsa, $12.99 per entree, and 2 softdrinks added up to $42. Did they charge us $5+ per softdrink? Did the server add her own tip and, then, hand me that device with the suggested tip that gave her twice the tip? Something wasn't right.
My husband did take a couple of sips of his tea and requested Diet Coke since the tea was sour; is it possible the server charged us for 3 drinks even though we had no refills on anything?
Although we liked our entrees with the exception of the rice that came with mine, we didn't enjoy them enough to pay twice what we'd pay at any other area Mexican restaurant. We will...
Read moreThe Queso was creamy and had a hint of spice to it. My wife ordered the Don Cuervo Quesadilla with steak, and kept mentioning how full it was with steak and cheese. She also mentioned how delicious it was. My son ordered the Arroz Con Pollo meal, and enjoyed the meal, but felt it could have had more queso because it was a bit dry. I ordered the BirriaQuesa Tacos. The plate has three tacos, a small bowl with a lime and dried Chiles, and a bowl of dipping sauce to dunk the tacos in. The Birria Tacos had brisket meat that was lightly fried and topped with pickled red onions and cilantro. At the base was creamy melted cheese. The soft taco shells tasted like they dunked in the Birria liquid and then lightly fried. The meat was flavorful, and the crunch from the pickled red onions and spiciness from the cilantro made these tacos amazing. They tasted even better dunked in the Birria liquid just before taking a bite. Also, I enjoyed my meal with a 32 oz. Negra Modelo. The service was very good, and we look forward to another visit in the...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place. The steak in particular that was used in the fajitas I believe is of higher quality than most other Mexican restaurants. However, it was more expensive and the serving size was really small. Maybe, I caught them on a bad night I'm not sure. All I know is I spent $50 and left hungry. The salsa that is served when you first sit down just tasted like crushed tomatoes and lacked any other notable flavor notes. I paid an additional $6 to try every other salsa that they make and all of them with the exception of one were bland. It definitely was not worth the additional price. Our waitress was unable to communicate with us properly and couldn't take our order without help(Couldn't speak English). Once our order was placed we never seen her again until she brought us the bill. We visited the restaurant on a Friday night and walked right in with no wait or anything. I should have listened to my gut and realized that was not a good sign. I won't be back and will spend my money at other...
