Nestled between a coin laundry and a Family Dollar in the heart of downtown Griffin, there is a thin building that often goes unnoticed. Though itâs in the center of town, 508 Taylor Street is hidden. This is because the parking lot is constantly full, blocking the view of the restaurant; the huddles of guests waiting to snag a table further disguise the buildingâs existence. However, those who have the pleasure of finding it will keep coming back, because Murphyâs serves the best breakfast in town.
When you enter the door, especially for the first time, you have to take it all in. The door makes a jingling noise as it slams back behind you. The aroma of freshly-brewed coffee and sizzling bacon makes your mouth water. The Hank Williams and Merle Haggard playing in the background is faint, but takes you back in time. Warm colors and framed photographs of the Murphy family line the walls, along with newspaper clippings and knick-knacks. The chatter of tables and screaming of orders behind the counter seems chaotic, until the ownerâs daughter graciously welcomes you in and tells you to grab a seat â âIf you can find one, sugarâ. Once you shuffle through the closely-packed tables and settle into one of the many squeaky, vibrant, diner-styled chairs, itâs time to eat.
An elderly couple has run the restaurant for years, and they cook all of the food themselves. Working side-by-side on a large griddle, covered in pancake batter and grease, they smile at one another like theyâve just fallen in love. Theyâre closed on Sundays, for itâs the Lordâs Day. They donât take debit cards, either. Those that sit along the bar pass the newspaper back and forth, and for the duration of their meal, strangers act as if theyâre longtime friends. The menu is a simple page, with all of the traditional breakfast fixinsâ one would expect from a Southern household â and everything is delicious.
Murphyâs is a beloved treasure of Griffin, a place that oozes simplicity and warmth. Whether you dine alone or with a group, you feel at home while youâre there, almost as if everyone in the building is one big family, passing plates across the table to one another. It embodies the very nature of Southern hospitality, and brings back the meaning and importance of breaking bread...
Read moreI think Iâve found where all the good chefs in Georgia went â Murphyâs Restaurant in Griffin, GA! This place is an absolute gem for breakfast and lunch (they close at 2 p.m.), and it captures everything you could want in a small-town dining experience.
If Anthony Bourdain were still with us, he would love it here â the food, the people, the atmosphere, and the pure authenticity. Thereâs a warm, old-fashioned, neighborly feel that makes you feel like youâve been coming for years, even on your first visit. The staff are genuinely kind, attentive, and they make you feel like family.
We go so often now that we donât even need a menu! Everything they serve is made with care and flavor. If youâve never had a Torta, youâre missing an important part of life. Their tacos are heavenly, and the pancakes â Iâm convinced â are the fluffiest on earth. Honestly, Iâd have to list the entire menu to do them justice.
Murphyâs is the kind of place that reminds you why local...

~ 10 days ago I visited here and ordered my favorite, huevos rancheros only this time I became very sick right after walking out the door.. I knew I wasn't going to make it back to my house so I drove to the closest nearby restroom, to where my aching stomach got a little relief before I exploded.. There was definitely something Wrong with one or more of the ingredients in my food giving me a quick dose of food poisoning or something just as bad.. I'll not eat at this restaurant again and I hope whatever caused me to get sick, gets fixed so it doesn't happen to...
