A deep dive into Stables Cafe

The food was great. The salad bar was phenomenal! However, the whole time I was preparing my salad, two employees were working slowly and complaining about a third employee right in front of me. I’m scared to wonder what they might have been saying about this person if I wasn’t standing right there. They never spoke to me to greet me or anything, nor did they move to make it any easier for me to reach the salad dressings they were slightly blocking. My presence was noticed, then ignored. I had to walk back around to the other side instead of making a full circle around the island to get everything. They just complained a lot. The salad was still awesome. We sat in the tap room, and the bartender was just sweet as could be. She really took care of us and made a great experience of our visit! I definitely feel the experience was as great as it was because of her. Don’t get me wrong- it’s a great place on her days off, too, I’m sure- but she really brought something extra to an already great place. I wish I could remember her name! But I hope the owners/management take REALLY good care of her. My review here would be slightly less positive if she had not been working that day. The feel of the place and decor is pretty cool, too. It’s the sort of decor you can walk around to look at things and not feel like a weirdo. It’s got a great vibe! The only real downside of my visit was the publicly griping ladies at the salad bar, but I wouldn’t feel right docking stars from a review. Their poor attitudes will catch up to them without me needing to knock a great restaurant over it! Note: I didn’t realize until I wrote this that I really only got pictures of the bathroom decor. 😂 I promise the rest of the place looks great, too!

What a awesome stop! The parking area was small with not much places to park..we ended up parking outside the library that was located right next door to the cafe. It looks smaller on the outside, but inside there's many rooms of eating areas filled with booths, tables, half booths and counters. There is old memorabilia everywhere you look, even hanging from the ceiling. The tables even had pictures on them. We were greeted so nicely and escorted to a cozy booth in a quiet area and after ordering we had to get up and check the place out. We got back to our seats just in time for the food to arrive. Our sweet teas came with both slices of orange and lemon..that was different. My husband and I ordered the open faced chicken fried steak on top of two texas toast with gravy, french fries and a layered chocolate cake slice. Our daughter and son-in-law ordered cheeseburgers and fries. Our chicken fried steak was huge, taking up the whole plate and so was the stack of fries! It was very hot and fresh from the kitchen for sure and so delicious..there was no way to finish it all, so so filling! Our waitress on the other hand never smiled and only showed up at our table to take our orders, then once at the end to fill our drinks, bring us cups and to go containers with the ticket. So basically, it was all great but the service. That's what they need to work on. We paid at the counter to the same sweet lady that escorted us earlier then left. Great cafe to eat at, I highly recommend it! Hopefully you'll get a better waitress than we did this time.

Was in Guthrie for work and looked up local restaurants. Stables looked interesting. Upon arrival I waited quite a while was then greeted by a young lady who told me to go sit in the bar area since I was by myself. The bar area is all the way in the back of the building and wasn’t very inviting. I returned and she seemed upset that I didn’t want to sit back there. Then took me to a table of which there were several open and not many people. She explained they try to save tables for parties of two or more. My waitress finally arrived and took my drink order. Brought me back a Diet Dr Pepper that was a combination of motor oil and who knows what. It was awful. I asked for a iced tea instead and she took my drink away. I went to the salad bar which was pretty nicely stocked with a good variety. Then she arrived with my food order and no drink. I asked aboit my tea abs she asked if I wanted sweet or unsweet. Unsweet was my choice. After quite some time and several trips to tables around me still no drink. I finally waved at her and she said “oh yeah your tea”. More time and more visits to play with the little girl at the booth next to me and she says, “your tea is coming”. It arrived and guess what, it’s sweet tea with a variety of lemons, oranges and a cherry in it. It was as bad as the diet Dr Pepper. The chicken fried steak was the size of Texas and cooked perfect. The mashed potatoes were good and the gravy was ok but tasted to be from a can. The toast on the plate had one half that was ok and the other I think was used to mop up a spill prior to being put on the plate. I’ve never seen anything as soggy in my life. Overall the food was decent but the service is lacking. If the food hadn’t been decent I would give negative stars.

On a return trip back from Kansas we had to decide on a place to eat. I suggested once we approached Guthrie wet did pick a place. We decided on Stables Cafe' although there were plenty of other options. First we has to find a place to park whick turned out to be a short walk once we did. We walked right up to the hostess and we were seated right away. The menu had lots of options which I must go back and try! We ordered an appetizer what they called Mini Onion Rings, they were more like onion straws. They weren't there best I ever had but they were enjoyable. I chose the BBQ Sandwich - Pulled Pork & Brisket were the options. I opted for the Pulled Pork. There's tons of memorabilia to look at while we waited for our food. Very nostalgic! Our food arrived and it was looking very good. The Pulled Pork was delicious with a great smoky flavor. There was a side of coleslaw that came with the meal. I truly enjoyed the slaw! The only downside was the bun it didn't hold up as well as I thought it should. Other than that the meal was outstanding! With a place like this I sensed that the desserts would be good. So I ordered two slices of pie to go. I ordered slices of the Coconut Cream and the Lemon Meringue pie. They were outstanding!!!! I would definitely order either of these again!

So sorry I walked thru the door of this place. Mediocre food and exceptionally lousy service. What more could you NOT want? How about paying at least double what the food was worth in terms of quality/taste? And at $3.25, you might want to slowly sip the brewed tea. It's absolutely nothing more special than the run-of-the-mill black tea blend you'll find all over town, but for some reason, it commands $3+ here. I literally had to get up and walk through the restaurant to track down the sorry excuse for a ''server'' I got stuck with, in order to get A, as in ONE, refill on my tea. The menu is loaded with rules about no splitting/sharing certain menu items. The lunch menu contained extra cautions about being charged extra if you get caught sharing--even language suggesting that the lunch menu item portions are too small to share anyway. The warnings read as though either the clientele are all skin flints, or the proprietor(s) is greeeedy. I had the impulse to get up and leave prior to ordering. Sure wish I had!

The food was decent. I wouldn’t say it’s anything special than any other ma and pa place. I got the chopped bbq sandwich with the onion straws while my husband got the catfish. I enjoyed the sweet bbq sauce that came on it, the onion straws could’ve been cooked longer- wasn’t as crispy as I wanted. My husband said the same thing about the fish (wanted it crispier). The salad bar was really nice, well stocked, and seemed to have fresh produce. The service is why it gets 4 starts. We’ve been in here a few times and every time it seems like it takes forever to get us seated- we actually left once before because it took so long to get seated. Never had an exceptional waiter, while they did keep our glasses full, they are slow when it comes to bringing the ticket or to-go boxes. I really enjoyed the atmosphere. There is a lot of rustic charm to the place. I love the wagon as a salad bar. *I will add that the parking is horrendous
