I recently had the pleasure of attending a stained glass class at Art on Derry. Our guide was Laird Augustus. He is the Rand McNally of stained glass. Laird's teaching style was not only informative but encouraging. He wants to pass the craft onto others and it shows.
I walked into the class with a touch of anxiety. I was a glass dweeb. I left feeling not only empowered but surprisingly talented in the art of stained glass—I felt like an x-man of glass. Like I was Wolverine or at least like the pink power ranger.
Laird's personable and friendly approach created a welcoming atmosphere that made the experience enjoyable for us novices.
Crafting alongside my wife and admin assistant, and her husband added an extra layer of fun. Despite my initial nervousness, Laird's encouragement and patience made the entire process a breeze. I couldn't believe how my succulent turned out – a masterpiece, if I do say so myself.
In the end, I discovered a hidden talent, and, to my surprise, outshone my wife and admin in the stained glass department – a first for me! They generally do everything better than me or at least I let them think that!

Read moreMy wife, friends, and I joined a fused glass class together, creating a beautiful design of birds and fish. Laird, our instructor, guided us throughout the process, making it an enjoyable experience.
Inspired by the experience, I decided to create a special Mother’s Day gift for my wife—a stained glass dragonfly. I had a picture of a similar design in mind, and Laird generously offered some ideas and advice. I scheduled a time at his shop, where I appreciated his guidance but also the freedom to work independently. I love the sense of accomplishment that comes from completing a project on my own.
Once I finished cutting the wood, routing it to fit the dragonfly parts, and painting and varnishing it, I was thrilled with the final result. I want to express my gratitude to Laird for his suggestions, ideas, and training.
If you’re considering signing up for a class like this, I highly recommend it. It’s an incredibly enjoyable experience that allows you to spend a few hours creating something truly special. Laird even goes the extra mile by suggesting a great restaurant...
Read moreI called to ask about classes. I have a $45 coupon for 2 people to take a stained glass, or fused glass class ($100 value)... I thought it would be a great idea for a date with my boyfriend. The guy who answered the phone was ungodly rude. Told me my coupon doesn't make any sense and that he doesn't have availability for either type of class. He goes on to tell me he only teaches advanced classes, to which he does not accept discount coupons. Well sir, you will not be getting a dime from me. I found a pottery class on the west shore for a cheaper price and a friendlier staff....
