Russ' Restaurant — Restaurant in Holland Charter Township

I've been going to Russ' on and off for 50-years. At this point in time, I feel very nostalgic when I go there, partly it's me, partly it's the ambience, which is decidedly old fashioned. What other restaurant has a soup and salad bar? If you set your expectations correctly, you will enjoy eating here. I like the soups very much, the vegetable beef reminds me a lot of what my paternal grandmother made for me so many years ago. There are some hits and misses on the menu, so you may need to experiment a bit. I had not been to a Russ' in several years and I enjoyed the experience so much that I will return soon. The service was up to my expectations and there was a QR code on the receipt that allowed me to pay the bill from my phone.

Note that they rotate the soup and desserts monthly and they do publish the selections of both on their website.

Last time I visited I had the pea soup, which was very good.

I'll also note that their vegetable beef soup is one of the best around, it reminds me of the soup that my grandmother made.

Waited 20 minutes to get a drink or even a waitress. Finally got drinks from one of the cooks..Decided to get the soup and salad bar so I wouldn't have to continue waiting for a waitress. Got my salad and soup and tried to remain pleasant, took one bite of my salad and almost spit it out because the French dressing was spoiled. I asked our waitress if we could please get some different dressing as I knew this was spoiled. (I've been eating Russ' French dressing since I was a kid) she spoke to Sonya (the manager) and came back to say that the dressing is fine!!!! I really hope no one gets sick from this. The waitress did offer to take the soup/salad bar off my bill. I went to pay and after ringing up the sale realized it I was billed for it. Explained to sweet young girl at the register then decided it was fine I didn't want a refund, I just wanted to enjoy the rest of my day. While walking to my car with my daughter and best friend the manager runs outside to say I didn't pay my bill??? Really??? I signed the receipt after the cashier ran my card and charged me for what should have removed from my bill.... WOW, worse experience ever!!! NEVER coming...

I have had some extremely terrible experiences in the years I have been eating here. Well done burgers that were raw, mistakes on orders almost every single time we call one in, and although we called corporate and received a free meal once for a mistake that was made, we still run into the same issues. The food is also extremely bland. I feel like they are just set in their ways.

That being said, my wife and I went with our daughter today and had a decent experience. We asked for crispy hash browns and they were very light.. My wheat toast was cold. The service was the same.. Drinks, order, bring food, one refill on coffee while she drops off the check, and didn't want to bother with the you get couple who probably doesn't tip well.

We tip very well usually. I used to be a server long ago so I have always been a good tipper.

I gave two stars based on today's "okay" experience. Overall they truly deserve the 1 star. I hope someday they become a little more progressive and maybe revamp...
