Three strikes, it's out for me.
The first time I came, I was with a big party and the wait for food was over 40 minutes. Since we were with a bigger party, I was completely understanding. The second time I visited, my boyfriend and I had dinner here. Again, longer wait, and I was a little annoyed at that point. However, when I saw a Facebook notification for their "Jazzy Christmas Eve Brunch", I thought it sounded wonderful and that we should give them one more try. I made our reservation for 1:00 pm, however, due to the nature of the busy Christmas holiday, I called around 11:00 am that morning to see if there was any possibility that we could arrive earlier. The woman on the phone was hesitant (although she did not explain why) but told us we could arrive at 12:15. We arrived a little early, as it literally only takes us around 6 minutes to drive here from our house. It wasn't that busy and we were sat right away and ordered our meals by 12:13. The jazz musician was wonderful- very friendly and he played wonderful music. Had it not been for him we wouldn't have been able to wait the 50 minutes it took for our food to come out. Again, the place wasn't that busy. I ordered a typical breakfast- two eggs, white toast, home fries, and turkey sausage. My boyfriend ordered the Eggs Benedict with home fries. We also both ordered drinks- My boyfriend had iced coffee (which tasted old) and I had a bloody mary (not bad- but nothing special at all- completely opposite of how the drink menu describes it). Now, it's not just the wait that is frustrating. If I had to wait 50 minutes for the best meal of my life, or close to it, ok. But waiting for 50 minutes for less than average food is a waste of time. The portion of home fries Brendan received was embarrassing- maybe 10 little pieces of fried potatoes. It looked like they were just dropped into a deep fryer, they were dry and there was no veggies like peppers or onions with them. The Eggs Benedict was even more embarrassing. I wish I had taken a photo, but frankly we were starving by the time our food came out and we were too disappointed in our experience to take a photo. The Eggs Benedict was served on English muffins- tiny piece of ham on each one, over done poached egg and barely any hollandaise sauce. It was the poorest excuse for Eggs Benedict that I have ever seen. My breakfast was below average as well- the white bread was so incredibly dry that I didn't even want to eat it, the home fries were bland and dry, the sausage was fine though and my over easy eggs were cooked correctly. We just wanted to get out of there, but I decided to talk to our server and inquire about the wait. The server was obviously disappointed in the establishment and informed me that this is a reoccurring problem. The kitchen here is too small to serve a large amount of people, yet the managers insist on booking many reservations. The result is incredibly long wait times on food and food not being prepared the way it should be. The server was great and attentive the entire time, as much as she could be, as she also had a table upstairs. Not one aspect of our below average experience has to do with the service we received. After paying, I decided to speak with a manager to express my disappointment in our visit. I talked about the 50 minute wait time, and the below average food. The manager was not surprised at the wait at all, and mentioned their small kitchen problem. I informed him that this should not be a reoccurring issue and should be taken as a learning experience for the restaurant. Especially on a holiday weekend, people should be warned about the long wait time before making a reservation or even being seated. Speaking to the manager did not change my feelings about this place at all.
I really love the new business scene in Homestead and do my best to support these businesses as often as I can. However, I will not waste my time and come to...
Read moreService was excellent!! Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, and the service was prompt but not rushed. The staff all worked well together and seemed to enjoy working there and working together. While not crucial that seem to enjoy working together, it certainly contributes to the overall "nice vibe" that permeates the establishment. Food was delicious!! The pierogies looked great, but we were both trying to be "good" with our dinner choices. It took A LOT of self-restraint, though. Another time...What we did order did not disappoint. My husband got the chicken and (something) chowder--the soup of the day. He said it several times how good it was. We both got the house salad with the champagne vinaigrette. The salad was fresh and crispy. My husband liked the dressing more than I did. It was "delicate," I guess, or something. I like something a little stronger. That's more a comment on my taste preferences than the dressing. He had the salmon with mango salsa and I had the flat iron steak. Both came with sauteed green beans and fingerling potatoes. Both entrees were well prepared and just delicious! The steak was perfectly done, tasty and tender. Although I can't really describe what my husband's tastes like, he has commented 3 different times in the first 45 minutes after finishing his entree that it was "really good," and "very tasty." The green beans were just the right amount of crispiness, and the fingerlings were crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. The desserts looked GREAT, but again, we were being "good." Again, another time...If it is your 1st time dining there, let them know when you arrive. When we mentioned it as we were about to leave, our waitress told us that they have a book put together by the owner's daughter that tells the history of the building and the restaurant. The parking is on the street, but we were able to park literally right in front of the restaurant. We have gone to the restaurant next door a number of times and have never had difficulty parking very nearby, either directly in front of just across the street. We thoroughly enjoyed our entire dining experience, and we will MOST...
Read moreGood atmosphere but experienced really bad service on a Friday night; the details of which are outlined below.
I got the french onion soup, which was delicious. My entree was the french dip and was mediocre at best. The bun was awful and instantly melted away just from the natural juices before I could even dip it properly. It looked like a bun anyone could buy at a Giant Eagle or Walmart. Tons of mushrooms, which, if that is your thing (it's not mine), you may enjoy it. I could live with the mushrooms, but the bun killed it.
The worst part was what my wife ordered: medium flat iron steak, since it was a house specialty. When her order arrived, a perfectly prepared steak was presented and she eagerly got to cutting and tasting. Not 4 bites in, the waitress comes back, informs us this was someone else's steak and literally took the plate away from my wife while she was eating. We were both shocked.... even if wrong, why take it away? We had already begun eating and what would even become of the dish? It certainly can't be re-served, so I'd assume it would just be thrown away wastefully anyway. The waitress never batted and eye and went about it like a robot. She came back with the actual flat iron steak my wife ordered and it was so well done it may as well have been beef jerky.
For a house specialty dish, we couldn't have been more disappointed. Couple that my run-of-the-mill dish as well as the serving audacity to take away someone's dinner, right or wrong, after it has been presented and the patron began eating, is unacceptable.
Hopefully it was an off-night and this is not a standard experience, but we certainly won't be frequenting this restaurant again. Which is a shame because it's a nice change of scenery in Homestead away from...
