Portland → Hood River: A Must-Visit Fairytale Gem of a Town!

If this service and quality was offered on a normal weekend it would be getting two stars, but with it being kite week in the area I can be understanding on the issues we ran into. First issue was seating, when asked to get out on the waiting list it would’ve been nice to get asked if seating at a community table is ok or if waiting longer for a individual table will be fine. Just a heads up of options takes away initial confusion once we show up for seating and the only space available is community seating next to a party or an additional 10-15 min wait on top of already 30 min wait. Once seated after being able to find a table for two, the service was great and attentive. The beer was good, and that’s most important I would think at a brewery. Food is where it lost stars for me. I ordered the Rockfish Fish and Chips, I mean you’re sitting on the Columbia after all. But for its price $$ this missed the mark entirely. The fish had zero flavor nor did the batter, the batter didn’t stick to the fish whatsoever, so it was either rushed in the fryer or wasn’t fully coated in the first place so the oil got in and ruined it. The “slaw” was sliced cabbage and carrots I’m gonna guess was tossed in a lemon juice vinaigrette but it was what the fish should’ve been sat on instead of the plating decision the kitchen chose. Speaking of plating, the tartar sauce was spread across the bottom of the plate, chips were placed on top of the tartar sauce which rendered you helpless but to endure eating your fries with tartar sauce, so hopefully you like that, but you’re not able to dip your fish in the tartar sauce which is the best part of this dish typically for me. Maybe I was supposed to eat this with a fork 🤷🤷 but it missed the mark on a pretty delicious universal dish. The cucumber and onion appetizer was great, and it took me back to making that dish as a kid during the hot summer months in Georgia so that was amazing, and my friends burger looked decent enough, the salad she had left a lot to be desired. Don’t think I’ll be going back anytime soon but if you’re in the area, give the place a chance and hopefully you’ll walk away more satisfied that I was. No pictures of the food unfortunately, because I actually enjoy eating my food when it’s delivered and not focusing on pictures when I’m hungry. Again it was kite weekend and there was a wait so I’m sure the kitchen had some timing issues with tickets coming in constantly and probably running the food out which usually go hand in hand from my years in a kitchen. The food was edible and nothing was wrong, so no need to send it back for all those wondering why not send it back if I had all these issues.

Disgusting Conditions and Unacceptable Management Response – A Parent's Worst Nightmare Our recent visit to Pfreim was an unmitigated disaster that ruined our evening and cast a dark shadow over our family vacation. What transpired was not just a lapse in hygiene, but a shocking display of negligence followed by a management response that was utterly contemptible. We brought our newborn to Pfreim, expecting a basic level of cleanliness, especially in facilities catering to families. Instead, we were met with a scene of absolute filth in the baby changing station. To our horror, the changing surface was saturated with liquid urine and feces. Unbeknownst to us until it was too late, our child was set down directly into this biohazard. The immediate aftermath was horrific: our newborn’s clothes were soaked, as were our spare diapers, the portable changing pad, and even our wet wipes. Our baby was left crying hysterically for hours due to this disgusting encounter. When we brought this egregious issue to the attention of the staff and then the manager, their response was beyond insulting. We were told they didn't "feel responsible" because they hadn't been "made aware." This is an utterly pathetic excuse. The changing station was in a state of extreme disrepair and unsanitary conditions, a fact that should have been proactively managed and regularly checked by their staff. The idea that a patron must discover and report such a health hazard before the establishment takes any responsibility is ludicrous and frankly, dangerous. To add insult to injury, the manager's "solution" was to offer a measly free round of beer or a single free meal. This is not only inadequate but demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the gravity of the situation. Our child was traumatized, our personal belongings ruined, and our vacation significantly disrupted, all because of their blatant disregard for cleanliness and safety. We were left scrambling to create a makeshift changing station for the remainder of our trip, a constant reminder of this restaurant’s inexcusable failure. Pfreim not only failed to provide a safe and clean environment, but their management’s dismissive attitude and pathetic attempt at compensation compounded the damage. No parent should ever have to experience such a nightmarish scenario. Save yourself the grief and avoid this establishment at all costs, especially if you have children. We will be exploring escalating this incident to the local County Public Health Department to ensure proper investigation and to hopefully prevent any other family from enduring such...

Below is a selection of findings at pFriem, first with the description followed by an individual review. Overall pFriem Brothers is an outstanding brewpub with the culinary chops to hang with it's brewing prowess. It would be a shame to come to pFriem and only order a beer, as the chef is extending the offering well beyond hops and barley.

BLONDE IPA "A refreshing blast of citrus and secret ingredient (sunshine) will have you looking forward to another before even enjoying its just bitter enough finish."

Review: A beautifully balanced IPA with barely a hint of hoppy bite. This is an all-day-long Summertime beer that should be consumed no less than twice on a sunny day.

CHARCUTERIE PLATE "abruzzo and fennel salamis from Chop Butchery, chicken liver pate, strong dark-raisin compote, olives, pickles, toasted bread"

Review: The selection of salamis were the bare minimum to be considered a "selection" and really should be extended to three or more. Their flavor and contrast, however, were well matched. The chicken liver pate was a bit on the salty side but certainly still delicious. The real winner of this plate was the rhubarb compote which was sweet, bitter and slightly salty all while delivering a hint of mustard which paired nicely with the toast and salami.

LENTIL CROQUETTES "veggie burger bites, roasted garlic balsamic aioli, spicy sambal aioli"

Review: Underwhelming in flavor on their own, but the aioli saved the day. I suppose lentil is fairly well known as a means to deliver other flavors, so no real issue here.

POUTINE "rustic boudin blanc, brown gravy, mixed herbs, hand cut fries, FaceRock cheese curds"

Review: No that we've reached maximum poutine in his country, the context for comparison has never been better. The first factor of any successful poutine is the French fries themselves and these represented. The lack of a meat (although non-traditional) was a bit of a letdown however the curds nearly made up for it.

GARLIC & GREENS PHYLLO ROLL "sauteed hearty greens, roasted garlic, eggplant, yukon gold potatoes"

Review: The beat description here is probably to say that this dish is a cross between vegetarian lasagna, beef Wellington and spanakopita. There was an acidity missing to the dish, but overall it was...
