The chicken sandwich is one of the classic American fast food entrees. The rise of Chick-fil-A in the past decade illustrates it's growing market presence. The recent "chicken sandwich" wars starting with Popeye's foray into the field and reports McDonald's plan on re-entering also suggest the same. It is thus only reasonable in such an exciting time when new sandwiches abound that delicious food seekers yearn for a non-franchised unique chicken sandwich. Enter Mico's chicken sandwich. It's not that the "hot chicken sammich" is something that is new. The southeast US enjoys many different variants of the same. But...it is new to try a spin of it in a new location. Mico's is currently a food truck with plans to move to a brick and mortar location next door. There are not many food choices: the "sammich", the animal fries, and the tenders basket. They honestly don't need anything more. The sandwich comes in your choice of 5 different of heat levels ranging from none to extra hot. I ordered the hot! It comes packed in a foil wrapper and I ate it around 30 minutes after delivery. Two deliciously buttery toasted buns envelope perhaps the largest deep red-black, golden crisp crusted chicken breast I have ever seen on a sandwich. The crust was extremely craggy and the spice level was perfect but with the balance of flavors getting the medium would not be denying yourself the complete experience. The spice and flavor of the breast is balanced and combined with the cool crunch slaw and cold pickles is mind-blowing. The Mico's sauce which is a mayonnaise base with spices ensures a flavorful coating to accompany every bite without being lathered on such that it is constantly dripping out. The fries are tasty and a waffle style and the ones I bought were not animal. I would have gotten animal style to share if I ate this with someone else considering the gargantuan size of the sandwich. I purchased this meal close to end of day and may have played a role here but the oil the fries were fried in could perhaps have been fresher. The Mico's sauce while tasty and balances the sandwich out is innately not anything special. I did not purchase the chicken tenders but will leave that for another meal. But nonetheless I feel safe to make this claim: Chick-fil-A may have the market and Popeye's may have the news but Mico's has my heart as it is definitively THE. BEST. CHICKEN. SANDWICH....

1st time here!
Saturday night 8 pm
The entrance: located off Durham in the heights. Seating is outdoors on a patio, some covered areas, wood picnic style seating tables on gravel
The first vibe: Good music with speakers located around the area. Love the curb appeal of the patio - great landscaping too. They have an area for big Jenga and connect 4, and a small playhouse for kids that was actually closed bc of covid I’m sure.
Time 2 table: - you order your food first in line and then go to your table. I’ve seen the line wrap around the building on IG, but roughly 10 minutes for us. Also they have covered awnings that wrap around the building in case it’s raining or too hot. That’s a nice touch since you order via the window. They do have a restroom in the building for customers only
The menu: really simple. Get everything lol - Tenders, sandwich, and the animal fries
The server: No server just the young lady at the window
The drinks: they have bottle drinks, topo chico, and bottled texas style lemonade and sweet tea.
The food: Yum! Compared to other hot chicken - the breading was soft but crispy, the seasoning had a sweet touch to it but was balanced perfectly with the spice level. My random favorite was the tenders and the waffle fries. I love a good crispy waffle fry and they have satisfied my need for this. See photos for our food!
The dessert: didn’t get any but I saw some banana pudding 👀 that I may have to get next time
The management: I heard about this place when I was watching a news special about restaurants. Young black couple started this establishment from a food truck and they’ve been super successful to turn it into what it is today. Love stories like this and clearly im not the only one bc they have a cult following!
The cleanliness: Clean! Patio area was clean. Didnt check out the bathrooms.
Be sure to follow us for future food adventures! IG:...
Read moreVery trendy chicken sandwich and chicken finger establishment located about a mile north of I-10 and just off Durham. This place definitely give a close race to Canes (located about a mile away) for the title of Best Chicken in the Heights. Both offer large fried tenders that are juicy and very sumptuous. Mico's distinguishes itself with it's unique hot sauce that greets you with the heat and let's it leisurely linger on your palate while a small dose of sweetness mingles to keep things in balance and not allow the heat to overpower you.
5 different levels of heat are offered. We chose level 3 or medium and we're pleasantly surprised at how well the heat came through. Next time, I will definitely have to move up to at least level 4.
We also tried orders of the loaded potato and the fried pickles. The loaded potato is a delightful mix of waffle fries, chicken chunks and Mico's sauce. One order is definitely a meal in itself and I would recommend only ordering this if you are not also ordering a chicken sandwich or tenders.
The fried pickles were good but not as crispy as I like. They provide a nice offset to the spicy chicken, however, Mico's does give you a few pickle slices on the side with your sandwich or tender order, so I'll probably skip the fried pickles next time.
It is important to note that this place is popular and has limited parking. I showed up at 6:30 and the closest parking spot that I could find was 2 blocks away. Mico's only serves takeout orders. They do have a nice outside dining option with three large screen tvs where you can eat your takeout if you so desire. When I was there, the seating was about 90% full .
The service is not as fast as Cane's during the peak hours. I had about a 15 minute wait to receive my order.
The food is good but the prices are a bit high. In the end a meal and a drink will cost...
