A fun upscale dive with a varied and interesting menu. Just be aware that as a rule this place is very spicy. If you don't like eat it spicy make sure and clear each menu item you order with the order taker. Those that understand "The Houston Heights" will appreciate this place's low key upscale ambiance. Those that don't understand will not see it as upscale.
I'll cover the negative first. They overcharged me on two items on my past visit and I hate that. I ordered a nopalitos taco and the printed menu at the restaurant said a flour tortilla would be 50¢ extra but they charged me $1. I pointed that out and at first the cashier said he wouldn't be able to change a price but then he offered to call the manager, but she also said she wouldn't be able to change the price. After a little arguing the manager made good and thanked me for pointing out the mistake on the menu. Oddly all tacos listed on the menu specified an extra dollar for flour tortillas except for the last two tacos, one of which was the nopalitos I ordered. I notice now on the online menu that all tacos specify an extra dollar...but they need to honor whatever prices are printed on their menu. If it's a misprint, a little work with adhesive tape and a sharpie can correct those menus. Not charging people more than the printed price is a basis of our capitalistic society.
What I unfortunately didn't notice is that they also overcharged me $2 for my supreme burrito. The price printed was $9.99 and that's also currently showing on the online menu, but I'm looking at my receipt right now and they charged me $11.98. That just burns me up!!!!
On another note, another basis of our capitalism is that people can charge whatever they want. If someone's willing to pay it, then it's OK. But really, $1 extra upcharge for a flour tortilla????
On yet another note, I'm so sick of these computer run restaurants. What can't be put in to the iPad can't be ordered. Whatever price the iPad says, that's what must be paid. What happened to humans? Problems happen, sometimes prices should be changed. Someone forgot to put on the mushrooms you paid for. Sometimes they're out of corn so they should give you flour for no additional charge.
Switching to the positive, there's a lot to like about this place. It's fun. It's part of a fun Heights restaurant row. It has a nice covered outdoor seating area. The food is good or very good. The price is not bad for an upscale place. The menu is diverse and offers some good stuff that you won't usually find at gringo oriented places, like lengua (beef tongue...recommended although it's not too good here), pozole (pork shoulder soup with hominy, limited time offering and it was good), and nopales (savory tender strips of cactus, recommended). Portions are ample and they have serve your self condiments and drinks.
Overall recommended but don't let them...
