Very fun Wednesday board game night. My husband and I accidentally ran into this place googling comedy. No, I didn't see any comedy there; but, I dig Pubs and thought we'd try it out. When we showed up there was parking, when we left there wasn't. I suspect you have to get there a little early. There were two small parking lots, one facing the Pub and one across the across the street. The ambiance was amazingly what you'd expect for a Pub a setting. Dark woods, big bar, seat yourself. A big calendar by a staircase that leads up stairs. At first I was disappointed because there was literally an event every night except for Wednesday. Then we saw a sign that said board games upstairs. You walk up an awsome dark wood staircase with twisted metal hand rails. Big, heavy curtains drap the door way entrance. A second smaller bar is upstairs. Turns out that Board Game Night is an event of it's own. I was blown away by the people who organize and coordinate the event. We greated immediately. Shown the table of games. Introductions were made. People wanted to play games with us and were very engaging. We did actually go there to eat though so food was a priority. We went to the back bar and ordered from a pretty impressive menu considering it's a pub. They had salads, pizza, chesseburgers, wings, fish and chips, etc. Then we picked a 2 person game we thought would be short and sat down. It wasn't short and as we got out the pieces it became complicated. Someone quickly came over and said, " I got you guys." Helped is set up the game, explained the rules, and got us started. Food came and my wings were delicious. Probably because I was enjoying my game. The bartender yelled at one point, " Alex's stupid husband, come get you food! It's getting cold!!" "Someone stupid who didn't take their number, your food is getting cold! Come get it!" And it was hilarious! People laughed and knew the guy and the bartender. Some people were even wondering if it might have been them that left the food. The place was just fun. It was unexpected and fun. We'll...
Read moreThis bar deeply disappointed me. About a year ago, I experienced what felt like blatant racism and discrimination after supporting this neighborhood bar for years so much so that I would regularly promote it to others as if it were my own.
One night, I brought a visiting friend and told them how great it was for meeting new people. When we arrived, I asked the bartender to surprise me with something creative. He rolled his eyes at me. After he delivered the drink and walked away, I tried to get his attention to compliment it and suggest they add it to the menu. He responded by saying, “You need to calm down, or else.” I was stunned and stayed quiet while my friend started talking to a nearby group. I wasn’t interacting with anyone else.
Later, my friend mentioned I shared a zodiac sign with someone, called my name, and I responded excitedly with a quick “OMG, hey!” At that moment, the bartender pointed at me and said, “That’s it you’re out.” I calmly responded that I’d get my things and leave, but before I could, he rushed out from behind the bar and physically shoved me toward the door. I barely stayed on my feet.
Outside, I was hurt and confused. I approached a staff member someone I had a complicated past with to try and explain the situation and ask for help retrieving my things. He shouted at me to leave and refused to engage. I only tried talking to him because the bouncer was ignoring me, my belongings were still inside, and I couldn’t reach my friend.
That night was supposed to be a joyful one a celebration of life and of overcoming so much. Instead, it spiraled into chaos. Staff accused us of actions we didn’t commit, and although things got tense, all legal charges against me were eventually dropped.
I acknowledge that my behavior outside the bar could have been better I own that. But I’ve always been told, “Never wrestle with pigs. You get dirty, and the pig likes it.” This experience left me deeply hurt, and while I’ve tried to move on, the way I was treated...
Read moreThis place is the epitome of a dive bar and I like it. I stumbled in here one Sunday afternoon with my roommate when we were exploring the neighborhood. It was pretty hot outside, so we wanted to go in, cool off and grab a drink. Rudyard's has a multitude of different types of people inside, and it was really quite fascinating. Immediately upon walking in, there were a lot of older patrons who looked like they frequented the bar, reminiscent of an older "Cheers" crowd. While waiting at the bar for a beer, I continued taking in the atmosphere and noticed a parent with her adult children having a drink, a few hipsters and even a woman with a cat on a leash. Not your typical bar scene at all. After waiting for a few minutes, I was served by a middle aged woman and the beers were pretty cheap. I noticed this place also served bar food, but I had already eaten so I didn't order anything this time around. (I plan on going back to evaluate the food in the near future). I could tell this place has been around for awhile due to the decor and smell inside, so we decided to walk around and explore. The venue is a lot bigger than I originally anticipated. Rudyard's not only has an outdoor patio area with an indoor space with table, but also features a gaming area on the first floor as well. The games here include darts, a decent pool table and my personal favorite, shuffle board. The could probably also install a cheap bimini ring game for fun as well. On my exploration of the venue, I also saw a set a stairs, which we decided to find out what was up top. There is a pretty large music venue on the 2nd floor, which I thought was pretty cool. Unfortunately, there were no bands playing at the time, but I know I'll be back to check out a band performing soon. So far this is the best dive bar I have found in Houston and a great place to chill-out & enjoy a cold beer with...
