Sashimi and sushi should be simple. At their core, they're not much more than seafood and rice (and nori plus a little extra, in the case of sushi).
It seems like nowadays, lots of resturaunts like to put their own spin on something that has been mastered for years. I can appreciate it, but i often miss the originality of sushi without the... extra originality... I suppose.
I'm sure most people reading this are familiar with the sushi available at your local HEB topped with Hot Cheeto dust, but I'm happy to report that here at Sapporo, the sushi is artfully (and simply) constructed. Rice and fish, yes (or shrimp, or calamari, or otherwise), but at its core, they have remained true to what good food should be: a good, simple recipe, made with heart and soul.
The meal I ordered was the Sushi Combo B, and it was exactly what I hoped it would be, perhaps a little more: elegantly presented on creatively molded ceramic with an orchid garnish to add some otherwise absent violet coloring, a delectable side salad and miso soup with soft tofu. Even the environment left very little to be desired, with the Christmas music playing in the background, and the cowboys game quietly on the TV, Sapporo's offers an Asian-American fusion environment without compromising on the food. It might even lend itself well to a first date spot.
I'm only here on business, but I still highly reccomend this place to both visitors and locals alike. 10/10,...
Read moreThis was a solid choice, nothing above average.. My friends and I were able to find parking close. But keep in mind, that because it is downtown, you will have to pay for parking, unless you go in the evening then its free. (sidenote: parking is cheaper when you use the city parking, adjacent to the sidewalk. After 6 or 7 it is free). The area around the restaurant is pretty nice, although there are a few (very few when compared to other places) homeless around. When we entered we were greeted very nicely and had a very polite service throughout the evening, we went right at 4 pm when happy hour started, and left at around 6 pm. Throughout the whole time there was only 2 other tables there, mostly empty. The food was a good pick if you're craving sushi. We ordered the: Philadephia roll, Shaggy dog roll, Spicy Tuna roll, Crunchy roll, and the spicy edamame. Everything was delicious. For myself, I ordered the Shaggy Dog roll and Spicy Tuna, water, and 1/3 of the edamame cost (because we split it), it came out to $25+tip if you round up. (Remember I also paid for parking $5). P.S. the restrooms were adequate, it was clean, but not super nice. I tried to add pictures cuz i took like 20, but it is not letting me. I converted my pictures 3 times to 3 different documents, sorry...
Read moreThis little gem of a sushi spot in downtown stole my heart years ago with both food, service, and price. They always had/have the nicest staff when you allow them and the coziest dining experience. I’ve been honored to share this spot with some of my friends and they would too love it!
I would come in sometimes before ride outs cuz it’s conveniently right across market square and because of that, I don’t like leaving my bike out for the public. Duh. So every time. These amazing humans open up their “always locked” back door to allow me to bring my bike in. Either just mine when solo or even all my friends. Of course I respect their space and would never over do it with them lol but man. I just thought to share this place over again with you all of you ever need a cute and convenient sushi date spot. Happy hour is the best but every hour at Sapporo Japanese sushi & Bar is...
