Taqueria Mi Charro — Restaurant in Houston

Mostly old reviews at the time of this writing but the pretty good reviews lured me in. Visited at 5:50pm and looked for a booth. All 6 or 7 of the empty booths (my preference) had dirty dishes, and with no one to greet me I sat at a dirty booth until a server wiped the table mostly off. I asked for the happy hour specials - waitress could not tell me when happy hours were but that they were posted outside and that they were not taking place on the day of my visit. Hm.

Complimentary chips were of the thick, heavy crunchy variety and not the light and crisp that I prefer, and my batch was a bit overcooked. A good but too-hot (spicy) creamy salsa verde and a more manageable but still very hot red salsa was presented. Ordered an enchilada plate. Refried beans were gr but rich and flavorful. Rice was average, lackluster. Lots of cold unmelted cheese on enchiladas which would have otherwise been tasty. Plate came with taco of carnitas with lots of meat that was dry and with some chunks of fat.

When done, i couldn't tell whether I was supposed to get up and pay or wait for check but since the check didn't come within a few minutes after eating I went counter to pay.

I use to love this place, but lately the service has gotten Horrible and the food is not consistent, I usually get the breakfast and the the egg's are always overcooked and the bean's are cold and it feels like only one person is working I'm not sure what her name is she has been working at the restaurant for awhile the really nice short lady she's ALWAYS on point with everything.. The other two ladies have also been there for about 4 months or more the chip and salsa lady and the tall waitress that Never seems to speak they both look lost and never know what they are doing, it's frustrating looking at them.. Forget about going on Friday's Karaoke nite is a nightmare, the lady that does Karaoke is so loud it's not enjoyable if this were a club it would be ok the space is small and the music is just loud and annoying, You can't relax and enjoy a conversation because you cannot hear anything.. Wow, so good! We were in the area way away from our house in Porter Texas and needed some lunch, Popeyes didn't have dine in, Burger King smelled like sewer and so I saw this little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant and I told my wife that I bet that place has good food. I have been in Texas for over 30 years now, came here from Louisiana and I have eaten Mexican food since then, but what I had at this place was some the best Mexican food I had ever eaten. The Charro beans were the absolute best ever, they must have some Cajun in them because those beans were full of meat and tasted awesome! The meat that I had was so flavorful I made Tacos with it and they were delicious! My wife had a simple dish but it was very good. We will be back for sure.
