Walk away from the waves. Come ashore at the door, of Skewers. You've just landed in The Mediterranean Zone..
For over 20 Skewers-less years I've motored up and down Fifth Avenue. Imagine that...me, a Med-Food-Fanatic, so close, yet oh so far.
Today, I put taste in front of haste. And I am so glad! This first visit is logged into my GPS, that's 'Grille? Pick Skewers'.
Solo trip for me, so no Fav Fab One to lovingly stare at while I sat in the main dining area, with my back to Fifth Avenue. With a very youthful and well-choreographed serving staff and interesting co-diners, the people watching inside way outweighed the avenue number 5 vibe.
Happily, snappy Jazz was musically setting the mood about the room. My first impression of the service was taken on by a young man, named Colman. He was quite attentive and I was extremely well cared for. I do feel he could take just a nano-second more time to interact. Yeah, I can tend to yak someone's ear off, but NOT when it's just a quick chance for a possible interesting human interaction. (I know times are tough on the service industry. Just trying to rekindle kindness universally).
Like lifted by a gentle desert breeze, as servers passed by wearing sleeves of food-a-plenty platters, sensuous aromas drifted in. Into my nose zone, carrying only sniff-able mirages of their origins. The Med-Fed-expectation was peaking...
I discovered I had a 50% OFF coupon, good towards any appetizer. Grape Leaves. Please! LOL I'm not sure how to describe the flavor my taste buds encountered on that first Grape Leaf bite. I guess imagine a clean earthy taste emitting almost floral notes. The spiciest non-hot earthy wow kind of flavor pow! The texture of the leaf is a spinach-ish firm but with a gentle resist when you bite. Your mouth is on a gastro-expedition as your teeth dig in. A bouquet of flavor in the sirloin stuffing captivates your taste cues. A pleasure plume of herb-y aroma permeates your pulmonary intake. Dipping 'em in that creamy yogurt dipping sauce, is optional! IF the Grape Leaves are that good, WHAT am I in for, and WHERE have I been??
My entree, I chose the Lamp Chops. Three 6-oz T-Bone chops herb seasoned to perfection. Served with a delectable jasmine rice and a sauteed veggie medley. NOTHING can beat the sweet signature note of lamb. In perfect time, I was presented with a Three chop orchestra of harmonious flavor notes! AND a Super bowl of side salad, so fresh with a hint of olive and the most amazing feta ever!
With each bite, I chuckled to myself a bit. Taunted by sooo many years of missing this veritable Mediterranean boat. And, knowing my Fav Fab One will be consumed with jealousy. That just means one thing! WE WILL be making a return trip from Tampa in the very near future. (I hinted that my birthday is coming up, in June, LOL).
In closing, it's real simple. I truly did NOT expect this much flavor! I was incredibly Wow'd! At this very moment, I'm excited about fetching my leftovers out of the fridge.
Gotta go! See...
Read moreOur favorite restaurant. We normally get the lamb which is so good. This visit we branched out and got the Mousakhan. O..M..G. It was so delicious and portion size was so big that we took home leftovers even though we shared the meal. We did get the Mediterranean Sampler appetizer which is the best tasting food ever (and arguably a meal in itself). What is nice is that they will sub the pita for carrot and cucumber chips, which is what we do. We sat in the bar area. I liked sitting there but the bar tender was our server and she was slammed. So we had to wait a few times when we needed her. That being said, other servers stopped by regularly to pick up used plates/glasses and one was able to get us what we wanted. We travel about 45 minutes to get to Skewer’s. It is so worth the money/time considering the quality and portions of the food, as well as the excellent service and atmosphere.
Update 11/17/22: Had dinner at Skewers again this week. This time we got the Kafta Syrian. It is highly seasoned ground beef on skewers with rice, topped with onion/sumac, and a side of hummus. Order a side of their lemon/garlic white sauce (just order this with every meal...it's the best part). It is truly amazing. We have actually ordered it the last 2 or 3 times we've been to Skewers, that is how good it is and as mentioned in my previous post, it is easily enough for 2 people. There are 4 skewers of meat and the meal is $22. We usually order an appetizer and an extra salad. You can barely walk when you leave (and that is with sharing). This particular night the restaurant was completely packed, inside and outside and--a first for us--they seemed short staffed. It did create wait times but the server was great she was just way busy. And there was a young man that kept picking up dirty dishes from our table to keep it uncluttered. Skewers, that is a really nice touch. I very much appreciate having the table continually cleared of dirty dishes, it makes for a much nicer...
Read moreThis popular Indialantic Mediterranean restaurant serves many traditional items. We started with a Mediterranean sampler platter that had Babaganush, hummus, olives, and a green vegetable mixture (I forgot the exact name of it). It was served with small slices of cold, flat pita, which really brought the dish down. We later learned from overhearing our waiter serving another table, that for a fee, you could order the thicker, warm pita. Had we known, we would have gladly ordered that. Considering spending $19 for this appiizer, it would really make sense to offer this as most other Mediterranean establishments do. At least the items were tasty. I had the filet beef skewers that were tender and very good. Served over a bed of well seasoned rice. We also were served a fresh salad with house dressing that had a very strong vinegar dressing. Just be prepared as it may catch you off guard. My wife had the lamb chops, which were served almost raw and off the bone (more like a thick loin cut). They had to be sent back. By the time she got them back, she had eaten her sides of rice and vegetables, so she ended up taking most of it to go. They were very tasty once fully cooked. My son had a gyro wrap that had several thin slices of lamb based meat with the typical sald. The meat was rather rubbery and not likely cut from a traditional chunk of meat off of a turning grill. He thought it was frozen pre sliced from a package. He ended up taking half home as well, which we used as fish bait the next day. In my opinion, skip the gyro. We ended with a baklava that had slight burt nuts, giving the dish a dry and bitter taste. Overall, we felt we could have better food elsewhere. It was not worth the drive, but some dishes were clearly better than others. Choose wisely, and you may have...
