Great coffee, but hours are very limited and employees are rude.
After my morning run I thought I would get a coffee at Java House, which I have done several times before, in the afternoon. I tried to go in at 6:50, but the door was locked. I realized they were closed when the opening employee shot me a dirty look. I decided to walk around for ten minutes until open, as I love getting the cold brew with cream/foam. Once they opened I went in. The employee did not greet me and ignored me until I spoke to her. I asked for the cold brew foam that is similar to Starbucks sweet cream foam (this is what I always ask for and the afternoon employees have no problem providing a similar suggestion). This morning, however, the employee began arguing with me that they do not have these. When I asked for something similar she continued to argue that nothing existed. After several minutes of arguing I remembered the name and asked if I could have a cold brew with vanilla cream/foam. You would think this would have been the end of it but the opening employee hadn't had enough. She then began to argue that this tastes nothing like Starbucks sweet cream foam. I replied by saying "well it tastes plenty sweet to me and other employees have suggested this as an alternative, so I'll do that". The employee looked at me and said it tastes nothing like that; "what do you want". Once again I said "I think it tastes great and very similar, I'll have that please".
She went to getting my drink then looked over and yelled "Ma'am. Ma'am. Card Ma'am" in an aggressive tone, as I was already actively changing the direction I inserted my card into the chip reader. During all of this my dog was tied up on the other side of the path, as they don't have anywhere to hook your dog up outside on their patio. Once I returned to her I realized I forgot her pup cup, but wasn't willing to go through dealing with the employee again, so we went elsewhere to get what we needed.
If the coffee wasn't so good I would leave a lower rating. Lesson learned that after a Friday morning run I will go out of my way to Starbucks who is open at 5:30AM and has much friendlier employees, despite not being a local business. My suggestion would be to hire an employee that can manage waking up and being friendly at 7AM, as I am certainly not the only person on the Monon at that time getting a coffee before work. I also doubt I'm the only person looking for an alternative to one of Starbucks most popular drinks, while also trying to support local. It may be worth training employees on a suggested alternative and suggestions on what to put on a cold brew instead of drinking it black.
Pictured below is the distance between the counter and the closest point I can tie up my dog. I know I cannot get coffee after runs if I'm alone and it is not early in the morning as the distance could result in a disaster if another dog were to go after her while I'm...

Read moreThe 3 features that make this coffee shop worth the visit: The atmosphere, the employees, and, of course, the large selection of cold brew coffees. . A first time customer, I came in to do some work from early afternoon to around 5pm. I found the atmosphere to be well suited for individual work; the volume of the store was more than appropriate (energetic buzz of conversation without being noisy or distracting). There was plenty of seating to choose from and I noticed that most tables have access to an outlet with enough table space to spread out.The seating area and restrooms were exceptionally clean, I mean seriously, for a public men's room, it was immaculate. The music they play is modern and enjoyable and I would describe the architecture and decor to be 'comfortably modern'. I went to order my drink and the barista, Sam, went above and beyond to help me pick one I'd like best. Being my first time there, I was slightly confused by the menu board, but he patiently explained the options to me and even gave me a small sample. I settled on an iced oat milk latte topped with some truly delicious 'cold foam' (which was a new concept to me). Enjoyed it so much I ended up ordering another...
I will definitely be back based on my experience and I'd encourage any coffee lovers in the area to give Java...
