My wife and I haven't had the best of luck with Chinese restaurants where you can order by number. Therefore, we were initially reluctant about trying King Dragon based on past experience. We mustered up enough enthusiasm since it was a new experience for us and we were looking for a new Chinese restaurant in the Broad Ripple area.
We should have stuck with our initial thought. We proceeded to order and it was explained to us that we could choose from a free soda or egg roll since we ordered more than $15 in food for dinner. We elected to go with the soda which was a great choice considering what proceeded to happen next.
My wife opened her can of Coke and proceeded to take a drink. The expression on her face was priceless after her first sip. She had me take a drink to confirm that the soda was bad. It tasted like weak flavored carbonated water with a horrible after taste. She explained to the girl behind the counter that the Coke was bad and would like to replace the soda. The girl needed to consult her father, cooking in the back, if it would be okay to replace the drink. He proceeded to look at the expiration date on the bottom of the can and tell us that expiration date was March 2013 so the soda should be fine. We attempted to explain the soda was bad and we would like to replace the soda with another soda. We kept getting the same response, "the expiration date is March 2013, the Coke is good". The gentleman refused to replace the Coke so thankfully we elected the free soda when choosing between the egg roll and soda earlier. I understand that it is just a soda, however, it was fact that the customer service was nonexistent.
I also had the unfortunate experience of have a gnat on my plate of food. I will go under the assumption that the bug landed on my plate while I wasn't looking and wasn't in the food the whole time due to the fact that there were several bugs flying around the restaurant. The food was average at best and there are many other Chinese restaurants with better flavor.
As much as I hate to say it, we likely won't be visiting King Dragon again based on our experience. Frankly, that make me a little sad since we love supporting the mom and pop restaurants...
Read moreThis is our go to Chinese takeout place, been going for at least 7 years. It's a little more expensive, but worth it! They seemed to have changed ownership in the last year, but our favorites and still just as good if not even better. But sadly the fried dumplings are not what they used to be, small price to pay for all our other favorites being the same or better.
Our favorites are the Moo Shu Pork and Singapore Mei Fun (sometimes it is super spicy, but so good!) Their Hot and Sour soup is a perfect cold remedy and even better now. I just tried their coconut soup and it's similar to Tom Kha Gai, but with chili sauce it's excellent.
Also, their meat is really good, not gross and stringy, they don't have the weird red tipped pork, except in the fried rice. I'm never wondering where exactly the meat comes from/how fresh it is. And I have never been sick after eating here.
If all you like from Chinese take out is the fried standards like sesame chicken and general tso's you might be able to find a take out place you like better. But I haven't found one better than...
Read moreDriven past it 10 years decided to try it because the Chinese Restaurant near my home is horrible. King Dragon wildly exceeded expectation on my first order of Black Pepper Chicken. Chicken bites with tasty with good amount of pepper accompanied by square cut green pepper and onion bites which were cooked leaving a little bite. The sauce was excellent. On my second visit I ordered the coconut chicken. It's good on its own but I added some Thai Curry paste I had in the fridge and it was even better. Got the cold sesame noodles for lunch tomorrow. It's been 20 years since I found a Chinese takeout that made them. Only $6! King Dragon is now my favorite hole-in-wall Chinese takeout. The only thing that could make it better is if was by my house. Still it's worth the drive.
I ate the cold sesame noodles the next day and found them to be perfect. Huge portion was enough...
