7/20/21 Update, and I'm afraid it's not good news. I tried doing a mobile order, as I had a lunchtime appointment nearby and thought "Perfect - I can schedule this to pick up on my way back to the office." The ease of ordering was fine. What wasn't so fine is that my appointment was over with early, so I showed up to the Steak 'n Shake too soon, at approx. 11:40am. The place was open, but empty. Nothing on the grill, no one waiting for food. Yet no one would make my order. I asked the grill cook. I asked the guy in the drive through area. I asked them to check with the manager. All said 'no', that they 'couldn't' make the order until it showed up on their screens, even though I had the order and payment confirmation in my hand. I even tried calling the corporate number displayed on a (lying) sign that indicated "Satisfaction Guaranteed. We are fanatical about providing exceptional service. We welcome your suggestions." Lying liar-faces, there is only a recording indicating that their offices are 'currently unavailable' and hangs up. So I waited, and waited, and waited. I even tried to click 'cancel order' on my confirmation screen, as I'd already been there for 20 mins. I couldn't simply leave, as I'd prepaid. Finally 12:15 came - AND STILL NO ORDER ON THEIR SCREENS!! An official looking woman in professional clothing came up to the front - not to see me specifically, but in the middle of something else. She asked if she could help me, and I explained what had been going on. She directed the staff to prepare my order, which they somehow could miraculously perform, and she also apologized. There's really no apologizing for this clusterf* of a lunchtime experience, but I appreciate her doing so.
YOU decide if Steak 'n Shake is worth your time, money, and patience. Not me, never again. See photos. You want to know why even 2 stars? Because the food is good. It just shouldn't be so hard to get.
June 2020: This location won't be open much longer. I work very close by, and thought I'd be a good neighbor and support them when everything started closing down. I ordered by phone, and told them I'd be leaving as soon as I hung up. One traffic light later, I was in line behind two cars at the drive through. SEVENTEEN MINUTES LATER, no joke, I finally got to the window and was handed a bag containing my cold fries and stiff cheeseburger. When I asked the gal what I could have done differently to get my food hot and fresh, she gave me an attitude and snapped "there's only two of us in here!" which is an incredibly dumb decision on the part of the ownership. As a retired restaurant GM and a former rest owner I usually give them a break knowing how things can go but this place and the person working was ridiculous. I've never in my lifetime had a restaurant employee be so rude. She refused to give us items that we paid for. My receipt printed blank but she thought she was going to show me so she printed a new one to prove to me the child's meal didn't come with a dipping sauce or a drink (the menu says they are Both included) Then when I pointed out that yes I did pay for a shake separate from the meal instead of apologizing and getting it for the child she walked away and refused to answer us. She refused to give a 3 year old ranch for his chicken because the computer didn't Say to give it and it cost extra. When I said read the screen it says right here that dipping sauce is included she again refused to read it. She said if the computer doesn't tell her to give it she's not going to. I said he's 3 years old you are seriously not giving him some ranch for his chicken? I don't care if it was 5 cents or 5 dollars the piont is if it comes with it then you don't argue you give it to the guest. She also complained that we came in "an hour before we close" it was 8:32 they close at 10 but idc if it was 9:30 you don't complain to a customer that they came in an hour before closing and say you already cleaned the sofdrink machine and shut it off. The entire experience was crazy. They where rude to take out customers that came as well. As I was leaving a lady getting a take out said they are always really rude here. I used to bring the kids here a lot. There was always a line it was packed at all hours. Tonight we where the only people in the entire place and now I know why. They ask for a tip in advance and again now I know why because no-one would tip them. I can't believe they can stay open with these types of employees. They never once even acknowledged a single customer. No "Welcome" or "Hello" on thanks for coming. They would simply yell out a name (even with just 1 person in the place) set the bag donw and walk away.Again no hello or welcome no thanks for coming. My employees stood by the take out counter I. y restaurant and asked the customer if everything they needed was there and waited for a yes then thanked them for coming and I voted them to come back. DO NOT waist your time and hard earned money here. Again I've never given a restaurant a 1 until now. Read moreFour days ago, I purchased two milkshakes and medium cheese fries, I get up to the window and the manager I will not name, said that my order was useless because the milkshake machines were down and they had no cheese. I asked the manager how to cancel my order so I can get my money back and she said, since I ordered directly through the website, she had no idea, I asked her if I could talk to the manager who knew how to do it, and she was the manager on duty. Flashback to the next day, we call ahead and we talk to them because this manager told us to just call ahead of the time that we were showing up to receive our items because we were unable to get our money back, and the manager on duty that night, said that they were unable to help us, and to come back a different day. The next day around, I call in and they said the same thing, they were probably the nicest manager I have spoken to out of the whole situation she apologize. She said she understands why I would be frustrated and told me when this Manager was working again so we could call in and she could leave a note for the closer the following day. So we called back today on Sunday, November 19 before 4 PM and spoke to the manager and she wrote the closer the note saying what we purchased and she said that they would have it ready by the time we got there at 8:15 PM. I go up to the drive-through window and I didn’t even get to speak yet and the person told me that they were closed. They are not taking any more orders, I tried to explain the situation and she just got really nasty with me. So I drove to the nearest parking spot and I called in the store because four days later I had the hardest time getting two milkshakes and medium cheese fries. This is absolutely ridiculous, I told the manager on the phone that I wanted a general managers, phone number or corporate, or I wanted to know when they would be in next so I could speak to them in person. The manager then asks why, and we explain the situation, she brought up my name right away, and just told me to come back to the store and she’ll take care of it. The manager did give me my food finally four days later, but this was absolutely ridiculous and I feel like I still need to speak to some type of general manager...
