This was my second visit to “Breaux Bridge”. The first was months ago and was abruptly terminated without my dining after waiting interminably to be seated by seemingly distracted, uninterested wait staff….despite a nearly empty restaurant.
This time the service was almost as bad. After being quickly seated in a virtually empty restaurant, I had to wait forever for a waiter to appear. He finally delivered a ridiculously overpriced drink to me…..$11 for a small, lukewarm glass of draft Blue Moon beer. While the restaurant’s interior was beautiful, it had all the hallmarks of a poorly managed, minority-operated establishment, complete with legions of non-employee, non-customer friends walking freely about the restaurant, including in and out of the kitchen. Apparently that commanded the attention of my server, as he was generally nowhere to be found. Eventually my order of a small cup of gumbo as an appetizer arrived hot, very tasty, and authentically creole. Unfortunately it was served in a plastic cup with a disposable plastic spoon and a handful of very stale saltine crackers. My need for some Louisiana hot sauce to put in my gumbo was largely ignored by my waiter who was busy conversing with his friends in the kitchen. There were absolutely no condiments on the table at all. Eventually my main order of boiled shrimp and boiled crawfish arrived piping hot in a large plastic bag half filled with spicy, delicious, garlicky-creole crab-boil. It was early September, months before crawfish season even began, so despite my waiter’s verbal assurance that the crawfish were going to be fresh, that was clearly going to be biologically impossible. Instead, it was obvious as I suspected, that the crawfish must have been frozen and stored from last year’s boils. Similarly, the headless shrimp were also from old frozen stocks. While the shrimp were quite tasty, both items were rubbery, difficult to peel, and small. The crawfish tasted awful. Fortunately, the accompanying potatoes and corn on the cob were actually quite delicious.
I couldn’t finish my entire meal so I asked for a large to-go container. I was told that the restaurant didn’t stock any. Instead it was suggested that I somehow pour everything remaining on my large serving tray back into the original plastic bag to take home with me. This was clearly going to be impossible for me to do, so I requested TWO small styrofoam containers, which my waiter kindly provided for me to fill by hand.
I was shocked when my bill arrived…..it was $50. With an overly generous 20% tip, my total bill came to $60, which included $22 of charges for two small glasses of draft beer. The latter ripoff was the final straw for me. This, combined with the poor wait service, the cheap plastic plates and silverware, the lack of condiments, the lousy crawfish and the many people meandering about distracting the wait staff, are all reasons why I gave Breaux Bridge a 2/5 rating. I am originally from New Orleans and have been to crawfish festivals in Breaux Bridge, La. on multiple occasions. How this restaurant has stayed in business this long with such inattention to its customers, poor wait service, over-priced drinks, meandering visitors, and out-of-season frozen seafood, is probably only because of the great taste of it’s gumbo and spicy crab-boil mix. I strongly doubt this will be enough in the long run to keep customers happy and coming back…..which I...
Read moreMy husband and I decided to try this place since we have never heard of this place. We were beyond disappointed. One gal was working the register and taking care of to go orders. We weren’t greeted. There’s no sign that says “please wait to be seated”. So…we waited, as expected. An employee came halfway up the ramp and then turned around to continue to speak to her coworker. When the lady was available, I walked up to her and told her there was 2 of us. She said “I’ll be right back”. Then another employee approached us and asked if we have been helped. I told him that we have and I pointed out the employee who was helping us. She said “he’ll seat you guy”. I said “ok”. He had to get the menus and seated us at a booth that was way too small for adults to sit in. So we loved to a table. He never introduced I self to us. I asked him if they had a full bar. He thought I was asking if they had a full menu. Lol!!! Wow!!! I had to explain to him what I meant by a full bar. He said “I think so”. I asked for a sex on the beach with mailing rum. He has never heard of it. He went to the bar and asked if it could be made. He said “yes”. We ordered the letter e on the menu…1/2 lb of shrimp, 1/2 lb of crab legs, 1 lobster tail, 3 corn on the cobs, and 2 potatoes. The food was delicious. However, we had to work for our food. He lost his appetite and didn’t eat. I had to take the shells off the shrimp, crab legs, and lobster tail. They give you any utensils to use for the crab. Had to devein several shrimps. I had to work for my food. That was no fun…especially for $35 plus tax. Don’t waste your time at this place unless you’re getting sandwiches and chicken tenders, which is just plain tenders….can’t toss them in Cajun sauce? Hmmm…??? What a waste. Our server never checked on us after the food was served. I don’t recommend this place. My husband had to resort to fast food to satisfy his hunger. Horrible experience....
Read moreI am very sad that this was one of the worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant. My husband and I decided to try this place after being on the road all day. We walked in and there was two larger parties sitting in otherwise a completely empty restaurant. We were told we had to wait due to the parties and the server was finishing with one of them. We waited and were seated. It was clear from the jump that our waitress did not want to be there.
It took a long time to get our food and it was not worth the wait. Our waitress never came to check on us other than to deliver our food. I ordered the fried catfish and each of my three pieces were cooked improperly and were slimy, smelly, and fishy. My husband got a sea food boil and the meat in the crab and crayfish would not come out of the shells. Every other place we have been to will give you utensils to help break open the shells. We had to ask for these from another waitress and we were given plastic utensils that were useless. Once our waitress did come up to check on us, we told her our complaints and she just asked if we wanted our check. I tried to tell her that my food was cooked wrong and too fishy again and she just repeated if we wanted our check without even trying to help fix the situation. She finally mumbled a sorry and handed over our check.
This was not worth the $50 check.
I've never had such a bad experience that made me want to write a review.
EDIT: As of 5 days since the general manager has reached out on both my husband's and my own reviews, the restaurant manager has not reached out. Very disappointing about the lack...
