Summary: With limited experience into authentic Dominican food I can really only say that Puerto Plata was good, but I wasn’t blown away
Order: Chicharron (Dominican style fried chicken) with yellow rice and black beans About: $16
I’ve known about Puerto Plata for a while, and I’ve driven past it a lot, but it really never showed up on my “to try” list until recently. Within about two weeks, several different people told me I really need to try, so I set out to give it a shot. I grabbed a friend of mine that also loves food and at the end of the meal we both agreed it was good not great. I would be fine to eating here again, but wouldn’t go out of my way to go back.
I ordered the chicharron with yellow rice and black beans in an attempt to get some thing a little more authentically Dominican. The rice and beans were OK but nothing special. The chicken was very good, and I definitely prefer that style to the super greasy American style fried chicken, but I’m not really a big fried chicken person. If I went back I would definitely try something else. That being said, my friend got the steak with onions (again, Dominican style, so pounded thin and then cooked) and he said it was super dry. Probably the winner for me was the mango juice, it tasted so fresh it was incredible.
Another thing worth mentioning is that right now they have no indoor seating. If you have spent time in Florida you know that can be a challenge in the middle of summer. The day we went the weather was nice, (high 80s low 90s) and they do have some fans out on the patio with shaded seating but it’s still gets pretty warm. I know in the past they had indoor seating so I’m not really sure what prompted the change, but it definitely feels more like a grab and go place now than a sit down restaurant.
Overall I definitely don’t think it’s a bad restaurant, especially for the price, but unless I go back and try something different that really blows me away I just think they land...

Read moreVERY disappointed. First, the lighting is terrible. I could barely see the menu. Once we were sat we waited a looong time to even be greeted. We did find out that they only had one server so they sent another person to take our order. Obviously this kid had not been told how to serve. After another long wait our food arrived. Mine was wrong so I had to wait again to get what I ordered. The food was good. Nice portions. Price reasonable. We ordered Presidente and I felt it was a little overpriced. I had to track the server down to bring us our check. When he finally brought it I glanced at it, looked up and he was gone. He had also left with some food I had planned to take home. I only ate half of mine and my wife was going to finish it later. We waited some more. I finally tracked him down again at the cash register and paid our bill then asked him why he took my food that was clearly over half what they had served. He just shrugged. So good food but a VERY unpleasant experience. I cannot recommend this restaurant. As for the feel of the restaurant, it feels more like a fine French restaurant with colors and lack of lighting. (there was one light in the area we sat with three small LED bulbs, one not working) I had hoped to feel like I was in...
