I had always wanted to try Big Ben's and I'm glad I finally did. When I first walked in I was met with a warm welcome and a very down to earth bunch. You can totally tell this is a family run restaurant. The menu was simple enough to understand and not overflowing with too many options. We settled on the Bear's Bear option and it came with plenty to feed 4-5 of us. I loved reading the history that is all over the walls while we waited, which wasn't long, and learned a few things along the way. Now I am actually pretty picky when it comes to greens and eating them anywhere but at my family gatherings as I do not like any type of canned greens and usually thats what I'm presented with when I dare to order them from a restaurant. I chose to dare this day, however, because the gentleman behind the counter response when asked if they were fresh or canned was how I had almost given him a heart attack at the idea that they would even think to use canned and utter shock at the audacity to even need to ask. So I was sold and man was I not disappointed. These greens were some of the best I have ever had, almost better than my father's! They were cleaned properly, seasoned and cooked beautifully and the taste was the product of someone who knows what they are doing. I did not get any sand or mush just nice hearty leaf after leaf. I will definitely be back for more. We also had rib and rib tips which were both cooked properly and had a nice solid smoke mark present in every piece. They still were capable of staying on the bone yet we weren't playing tug a war trying to get a bite. We were given plenty of BBQ sauce on the side which meant we go as light or heavy as we wanted. The potato salad was Good and had that homemade type of look and taste to them that just took me back to those family gatherings I went to as a kid. I snapped a picture of my plate after I finished most of my greens because I never intended to write a review but I wanted to have proof that I actually ate and enjoyed greens from a restaurant cause my family knows I do not play around when it comes to the quality a thing of greens has to have to make it on and...

I have eaten at a lot of bbq places, even stopping in different ones when I travel
Benās is not a location I could recommend for people who really know and love bbq. While the food isnāt bad, itās passable, it just isnāt up to par for a bbq joint.
Take the potato salad, thereās nothing unique about it in the least. It could have come off the shelf at Kroger. Same for the baked beans etc. itās not that itās bad, it just isnāt homemade great.
The standout side was the mac&cheese, yeah that was homemade, good and cheesy. good job on it.
Same applies to the pulled pork. Guys, YOU DO NOT PRESAUCE the pulled pork. Are you serving bbq or manwhich? The pork must stand on its own...including bark etc...before sauce is used. See Famous Daveās, Feast, Rubbing Butts etc. presauced pork is something you do when you are making it in a crockpot, not a smoker.
I donāt mean to sound harsh but i wanted to go into detail about this, not just say oh yeah it was ok. Hopefully this will help them improve because right now....honestly...itās mediocre for the price.
a dinner is $9 at big bens or $13 at a place like feast, but feast has bigger portions of much better bbq. That doesnāt make Ben a bargain, it just makes it mediocre, with mostly smaller portions at a cheaper price.
Even a place like Brownies the shed has better pulled pork and sides (over all). Brownies is not a bbq place. If you donāt believe me, try it.
For what we received for $19 at bens, I was pretty disappointed. This downtown area desperately needs a real...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBeing from KC, I wanted to try something while in town. Nice little joint, friendly service and great food. Asked if I was from KC because I was wearing a Royals hat and of course I said yes. The guy in the kitchen, which I'm assuming was the owner said "I got something special for you, not on the menu but want you to try it". Well it was a sampling of different meats, and I have to say they were really good. The pulled pork was awesome, the chicken was stolen by my daughter, so I can't rate that one but based on her stealing it, I'd have to say it was good as well. The burnt ends were tender, tasty and done right. Since I didn't get to try anything else (sides, meats, etc.) I can't say 5 stars but next time I'm back in town, I'm going to complete the menu and rate it again. Also only one option for the BBQ sauce and he mentioned his previous batch wasn't up to his standards, which I truly appreciate the honesty on that. Looking forward to trying the favors I missed out on. Have to say, in all my travels one of the coolest little places, great food and friendly service and an owner who just wants to give...
