Hidden Grounds Chai & Coffee HouseHidden Grounds Chai & Coffee House
If you're in search of the ultimate taste sensation that transports you straight to the streets of South India, look no further than Dosa Hut in Jersey City. While it may not be the most ostentatious place in town, it's the soul and authenticity of this little gem that truly sets it apart from the rest. Upon entering Dosa Hut, one cannot help but feel an immediate embrace of warmth and comfort, like you're stepping into a bustling and lively Indian marketplace. The modest, no-frills décor invites you to focus solely on the tantalizing aromas and delicious flavors that await you. The pièce de résistance of this culinary haven is undoubtedly the crisp dosa. This golden-brown, paper-thin crepe, made from a fermented batter of rice and lentils, is the epitome of perfection. The dosa, with its crispy exterior and delicate, fluffy interior, is a marvel of texture and taste that will have you coming back for more. The pav bhaji, another must-try delicacy, is the perfect marriage of spicy mashed vegetables and buttery, soft bread. Each mouthful of this heavenly concoction is an explosion of flavor, leaving you in a state of euphoria as you savor the intricate blend of spices. No visit to Dosa Hut is complete without indulging in the paprika chaat, a symphony of sweet, tangy, and spicy notes that will leave your taste buds dancing in delight. The crispiness of the papdi, the tangy tamarind chutney, and the perfect sprinkling of paprika create a dish that's not only pleasing to the palate but also a visual treat. At Dosa Hut, the motto is to "come for the food, stay for the soul." So, don't come here looking for something fancy. Instead, prepare to be wowed by the genuine and heartwarming dishes that have been crafted with love and skill. Each bite at Dosa Hut is a testament to the passion and expertise of the chefs, who have managed to capture the essence of Indian cuisine. In conclusion, if you're seeking an authentic, soulful dining experience that will leave you craving for more, Dosa Hut in Jersey City is the place to be. Forget the frills and indulge in the true essence of Indian flavors that will linger on your taste buds long after you've left the restaurant.

Sad to say I never visited yesteryear Dosa Hut, so I'll take people's word that it was good back in the day--but you know what? Todayyear Dosa Hut is still pretty awesome, so I'm happy with that. If you want the most interesting flavor bomb in your mouth, try the Gunpowder Onion Chili Masala Dosa, which lives up to every part of its name (including the bang). The classic Butter Masala Dosa is as big and crispy as possible without breaking apart, while the Rava Masala Dosa offers a different-textured wrap that's just as exciting. I was too stuffed to try more than a bite of the Vada Pav, but remember it being fluffy and flavorful. Not sure I'll ever get around to having a full one since I'm going to be trying as many dosas as I can here every time I make the schlep over. Points also for freshly made Mango Lassi, though on a scale of milkshake to yogurt, it definitely leans on the yogurt side of thickness. Decor is just as minimal and bare bones as you'd expect for a restaurant with better things to worry about, but service was friendly and fast. Then again, we did come by after 2:30pm on a Sat.

Short summary: Dosa Hut is excellent, Newark Avenue is a great destination for authentic Indian dining. Atmosphere is not what this place is about, spartan is an apt description. The blah blah part: Wow. Dosa Hut is amazing. Please do yourself a favor and take a walk down the hill on Newark Avenue in JC, stopping at Dosa Hut near the top of the hill for a dosa as an appetizer (best if split with someone, they are large). Then, either try the other items here or continue down the avenue to one of the many other restaurants. I have not had the Dosa Hut's entrees; the Hut is all vegi. Last weekend I had a masala dosa with potato (aloo) and paneer, it was amazing, and I don't use the word lightly. It was an explosion of flavor.

I visit Dosa Hut twice a week, and each time is a delightful culinary adventure as I work my way through their extensive menu of dosas. This cozy spot offers an impressive range of South Indian delicacies, with the dosa varieties being the clear highlight. The Plain Dosa is a perfect introduction, showcasing the simplicity of a perfectly crisp crepe paired with flavorful coconut chutney and sambhar. The Mysore Masala Dosa takes things up a notch, with its spicy chutney spread inside and a comforting potato filling that delivers just the right amount of heat.

For those who enjoy a cheesy twist, the Cheese Dosa adds a rich, creamy layer, making it an indulgent choice. The Chili Dosa is perfect for spice lovers, with a fiery kick that keeps you coming back for more. Unique options like the Pav Bhaji Dosa, which combines the flavors of Mumbai street food with a South Indian base, and the Spring Dosa, stuffed with crunchy mixed vegetables, showcase the restaurant's creativity and versatility.

Every dosa comes with a side of their delicious sambhar and chutneys, which are consistently fresh and flavorful. The service is quick and efficient, even during busy times, and the staff is always welcoming and attentive. Each visit feels like a new experience, as I continue to try different dosas and explore the endless options. Dosa Hut’s commitment to authentic flavors and variety makes it my favorite spot for South Indian cuisine. Highly...
