When I lived in Jersey City this place was a God send. There aren't many positives to living up here (read: Jersey), but Little India is one of them. Think about it like Curry Row or Curry Hill in NYC, except actual Indians primarily go there. While I went to several different places, Dosa House (not Dosa Hut) was my go to. Don't come expecting frills as there are none--neither for the place or the food. Expect styrofoam plates, a dirty looking table, and a little bit of attitude perhaps. Know how to read an Indian menu? Sure hope so, as it will be hard to read otherwise and the guys at the back of the place aren't that great at describing things. Everything is vegetarian so don't expect any meat. Also good luck getting a table at peak hours; seriously I've never seen the place empty. You order in the back, they give you a number that they'll call later and you go up to grab your food. Think of it like a cafeteria--with great Indian food that is. I have a tendency to order the same items once I find something I like at an Indian restaurant, so I didn't explore the menu as much as I could've. Even so, Dosa House is naturally famous for their Dosas, and a variety of other similar foods and Indian snacks (again, all vegetarian). You get a free soup called sambar for ordering anything. The sambar can be uneven, where sometimes it is rich with flavor and occasionally it's a bit watery; stir it for best results. Oh well, it's free. The namesake dosas are crisp with a slight sweetness to them. The potatoes they use are so simple yet rich with flavor and spices. I used to get the palak paneer dosa, with cheese and spinach; my only fault with it was that the spinach would get a little dry, especially on the edges. With the peanut and coconut dips they provide, this is about as good as I've found for dosa. The samosa chat--basically crushed samosas in a yogurt sauce with additional spices--is great Indian peasant food. The portion is also very large even though it's already a very filling dish. Other items (pane puri, utampam, luchi) are all well executed Indian food and snacks. All in all the kitchen knows exactly what...
Read moreGanesh Dosa house without a doubt serves the best Dosa in whole of Jersey City, NJ. It is one of the most popular restaurants on the Indian street in Journal square area. I found the food served here pretty good, the place is kept decently clean, the service is quick and items are reasonably priced. In the evenings and weekends, the restaurant gets crowded and may involve a wait to get served. It is a pure vegetarian self-service restaurant, one has to place the order at the counter and wait for them to call the order number once ready. However the restaurant can improve on their Hygiene and Cleanliness of the restrooms.
Dosas are savoury South Indian crapes served generally with chutneys and sambar(spicy veg lentil soup). They serve about 50+ varieties of Dosas here. Each Dosa is served with white(coconut) and orange(tomato) chutneys on the side. One can pick the sambar from a table setup behind the order counter at the back. I absolutely love the Dosas served here, my favorites are Peserattu with Upma, Masala Dosa and Rava Onion Dosa. Few other popular dishes served here are Idli, Vada and Mysore Bonda
Peserattu with Upma is a Dosa made with green gram and stuffed with some Upma in the middle. It's very unique of a South Indian state Andhra Pradesh. Masala Dosa is their most popular item which is a simple Dosa served with potato and Onion bhaji stuffed inside. Rava Dosa is a thin and super crispy Dosa.
Recommendations: Peserattu with Upma Masala Dosa Rava Onion Dosa Idli or Masala Idli
