Update to my previous review. I will provide photos on my next visit.
Review of City Diner
The City Diner in the River Market area of Kansas City is a really great place to eat breakfast. I've eaten here multiple times since a recent discovery, although it has been here for years and I've known about it for years. I've had 1/2 of the #11 which is 2 country sausage, hash browns and Biscuits & Gravy. I'vw had the #2 which is your standard 2 eggs with 2 straps of bacon, Italian sausage, country sausage or ham and toast. I've also had the Shredded Chicken Philly omelette twice and both times it has been off the chain. I don't generally gravitate towards an omelets when I dine for breakfast but I make an exception when dining here. The chicken is exceptionally flavorful and shredded perfectly so you get a little in every bite. The hash browns are cooked perfectly, in my opinion. They are nice an crisply browned on top and not overly slogged down with butter. The 12" pancakes are exceptional. They are cooked perfectly. The edges are nice and crispy and the insides are light and airy. The service is also very good. Jamie, she's the only one I know by name, is very kind and does an exceptional job of not only waiting on her customers but also those of us that choose to sit at the counter even if it's not her section. The other ladies that work here are also very good at making sure their customers are well taken care of. They are also very engaging. They apparently have a large group of regulars whose names they know. The prices are also very reasonable. Most of the breakfast items are in the $7 to $10 range and you shouldn't leave hungry. It seems to be a very family friendly place as well. Overall, not only would I recommend eating here and bringing as many people with you as possible. I would encourage you to put this in your rotation of places to dine, if like me, you eat out and love...
Read moreMy son and I came here for breakfast on our way through the town. the place has the classic Diner look and feel both inside and out! We came in and were greeted by friendly hostesses/servers, who were also engaging with the customers already in the restaurant.
We ordered an omelette and a plate of pancakes. The food was classic diner fare and at a great price. The portions were also pretty sizeable.
What makes this place stand out amongst others was the staff. They were so friendly with everyone in the diner. They were having conversations with lone diners, asking people about their day, sharing stories of their own. The interactions in this place while seemingly normal to some, I sensed were really meaningful to the customers. There were elder customers that were dining alone and the servers were really taking their time to engage with them. In fact, when one customer was leaving, one waitress took the time to walk him all the way to his car in the parking lot.
They are not just serving food here, they are serving humanity....
Read morePoor, poor, pitiful me! This morning I had to take my car into the shop and have four new brakes put on it. Now going to the shop and having my brakes replaced always makes me hungry so when all was said and done and the tab paid, I hopped in my car and headed towards the old market. For you see, as I was sitting there waiting for them to finish the car, having nothing better to do, I started looking for restaurants in the area. An lo and behold what pops up other than The City Diner.
I must have driven by that place 1000 times this since I moved to the Kansas City area in 1984. But until today I had never stopped in. So I stroll in up to their counter, grab a stool, sit my carcass down, and I ordered up a meat lovers omelet with hash browns and a biscuit. I added a little side of gravy to make the hash browns look better and taste better and there was enough left over for the omelet too.
Everything came out hot and delicious and I had no problem enjoying a late but delicious breakfast.
Well done City Diner!
Well...
