After seeing the Donado featured on the TV show Cheap Eats on the Cooking Channel, my wife and I wanted to check this place out. To start with, my wife looked at their online menu to see if they have gluten free options and they do. We found out that Donutology gets their gluten free options from Emily Kate's gluten free bakery here in KC. We get their products at Whole Foods and they are some of the best gluten free pastries we've tried. A good portion of why they only got 1 star is due to the guy behind the register last Saturday afternoon. He was very condescending. My wife ordered first to give me more time to go over the menu, plus she only had two flavors of Emily Kate's donuts to pick from. Since Donutology serves Betty Raes' ice cream (another local favorite of ours), she wanted a scoop to go with her donut. This was a struggle for the guy behind the register, but finally we got a cup. I was interested in trying their signature mini donuts and asked if I could get one of each. Again, working with the guy behind the register was a nightmare since apparently there is something like 15 million combinations they can do. When I asked for the 15 mini pack, I was told that I'm limited to a few of the signature mini donuts. My wife questioned if I could eat that many mini donuts and my thoughts were to have some for breakfast the next day, but the guy behind the register said that the donuts would not be good tasting by then. If my wife hadn't already got her order, I was ready to walk out right then. I settled with ordering the Donado. Both the Donado and my wife's cup of ice cream were served to us without a spoon nor a napkin. We were instructed that these were available on the opposite side of the store from where the pick up section is located. My wife enjoyed her donut and ice cream, but remember that neither were made by Donutology. This also goes for the ice cream and sprinkles on my Donado, so lets talk about the donut. In all of my years I don't think I've ever tried a burnt donut since this was an awful taste. Unfortunately my donut was burnt on one side. It was also undercooked (doughy) at the bottom where it was folded over. I also disliked the sugar on the outside since it made this messy to eat. Normally I would be willing to give them another try since I would really like to try the mini donuts, but I really really never want to go back. If I did, it looks like they offer a three pack of mini donuts and you can pick three from their signature minis. If you got 4 of these, you could try all 12. To bad the guy behind the register didn't spend more time in figuring this out than the total number of combinations they can do. Looks like the mini donuts are made to order so maybe that was why we were given such a difficult time. Because of this, I'm not sure how great this place would be if you wanted to make a quick stop before work. Their location and parking are also a little tricky but simple to work with on...
Read moreThis is a cool spot and we were happy to be here. I am sure it was a bad day, but I won't be back. We were still willing to give your donuts a try even though the customer service was horrible and the professional didn't acknowledge the couple in front of us or the people behind us through several phone calls and orders she took. The donut maker guy attended to another family who couldn't figure out what they wanted. That situation was a bit of comic relief. The mom and her children were super patient and so was the donut maker. Another woman, probably the owner, walked out and talked to the two then disappeared while she looked at all of us in line. It took a little while longer for the donut professional to come over and finally serve the growing line. This place is popular. I get it. The donuts looked really good. But then they wanted to charge $5 for an apple fritter. A large pancake-size apple fritter from the home of apple fritters in San Francisco is only $3.25. How could there be such a price difference between the two? The one at Donutology was one-third the size and half as thin. I decided to forget the $7.50 bill for two smaller-than-average donuts and went to McClains. They never disappoint. Since writing my original post, I read someone elses post where the owner says her prices are dictated by supply chain and are cheaper than local competitors. Sorry, that's not true. I have included a picture of another local donut shop charging $2.75. People are paying for your marketing, brand experience, and name. If your products aren't organic, then $5 would be hard to believe. I think what really bothered me is the couple in front of us was a very nice African American couple. We spoke with them in line. I felt embarrassed for them. From reading your reviews, what sticks out is poor customer service. That's not uncommon, but I expected better. So just hire another person if you are going to make the total experience top notch everytime...
Read moreMy daughter and I have been wanting to try Donutology for months and our first experience was terrible. We filled out our paper order, the lady at the front had a random pile of about 15-20 orders for donuts on a shelf. She said to stick the order anywhere on the shelf and they would get to it "eventually". Literally, a completely random selection of orders, we got entirely through the line with our order not even being started, there were a good amount of people just waiting. Even worse, all 4 employees working on the custom donuts were miserable. No smiles, no greetings, no hurry despite there being a line almost to the door. Mostly, one or 2 people would work, 2 others would watch. When we finally got to the end of the line, we found a glass case where we could order pre-made donuts. There were 3 other people in line next to me that wanted the pre-made donuts but waited in the build your own donut line because it wasn't clear when you walk in, where to go. I watched 2 people in line just walk out from frustration. After waiting 20 minutes for donuts (which were never even started), we just canceled our build your own donuts and ordered from the glass case. The biggest upset, even more than the wait, our donuts were dry. The frosting was hard. They looked fantastic but I've had far better donuts from grocery stores. There wasn't nearly enough seating and plenty of room for more. After all our waiting, we waited for about 5 minutes more for a table to clear up but it wasn't happening so we just bagged our donuts and left. Parking was a mess. I know it was a little on the busy side but it should have been manageable. A little customer service would have gone a long way this morning. It was a disappointing experience for my...
