We visited here for my husband's birthday. We have gone to every sushi place from Tacoma to Northgate and for the longest time Cap Hill's Momiji was the clear winner. While they have well executed fresh rolls Kaunta is fresher. Maybe more simplistic offerings but it feels more authentic and Kaunta is letting the raw fish shine where I feel a lot of places drown their sushi in sauces. While not as innovative and mind blowing as Ltd Edition sushi (by cal anderson park) Kaunta ticks off all the essential boxes when it comes to what sushi really should be without reinventing the wheel. If I had to rank my top 3 sushi spots Kaunta lands squarely in the middle. I'll probably go to Momiji more despite living in Tacoma now because I don't need a reservation nor do I need to pre-order like you have to for Kaunta however the trade off is that Kaunta tastes a lot fresher BECAUSE of that policy. Kaunta will likely be my go to for when a friend is in town and I want to take them to an impressive sushi spot but that friend wouldn't be adventurous enough for Ltd Edition (where it's sometimes better to not ask what you're eating). Really, Kaunta is bucket list level high quality sushi and it's worth the hassle of it's...

We were looking for a place for lunch on a Weds and were worried to come to Sushi Kaunta because it was a last minute decision (it said online to reserve in advance prior to coming in). I phoned in at 12:45p, and Chef was able to accommodate 2 of us for a 1:30p reservation (one of us coming from Maple Valley, and the other from Seattle).

There is street parking for free, and I was able to find it quick. Sushi Kaunta is located across from a bank in a small building. As you come from the street, you can see chef right at the counter, prepping for the meal. He is friendly, greeting with a smile, showing me the QR code for the menu, and offering to prepare me anything while I await my friend to get there. There are tables available to sit on, but we preferred to sit right at the counter to be able to interact with Chef Sean.

We both ordered full sized premium kaisen dons, as well as trying out Hokkaido vs Oregon unis! Chef received a fresh stock of uni the same day and made sure he tries his supply first to ensure the quality was high for his customers. The quality and service from Sushi Kaunta is top-notch, and has effectively ruined all other mid-level sushi spots for me, haha! I will be...

I've been wanting to try this place for a long time now but always forgot to be quick with the reservation system. It's not hard to get into as long as you watch his social for the update. Typically on Sundays every two weeks he opens the reservations. You preorder what you want and pay half the total as a down payment. One man running the whole restaurant and he's definitely putting in work!

We snagged a 4pm on a Saturday and had ordered the premium don bowl, chefs nigiri special and two extra pieces of otoro nigiri. We literally just got back from Japan a month ago before visiting this place and it slaps! Definitely high quality, he made the order fresh and we gobbled it up so quickly. Reminded us of the sushi we ate in Japan! Highly recommend the premium don. You get to try a variety of seafood with a little or a lot of rice. The rice was flavorful too hiding underneath everything. And the nigiri special. Had a few of the same fish but there were other pieces I didn't have. Hard to share though as it's only one of each type so my husband and I would take half bites. Haha.

My husband ended up coming back to this place with his friends for their birthday. They all loved it!...
