This restaurant is a long-time Dayton tradition and they have been largely successful. If you have not been there or tried their pizza and were confused by it there's a good reason. Marion's (as well as Cassano's) serve St. Louis-style pizza and traditionally that style of pizza will have a yeast-less crust, a processed provolone cheese known as provel, and will be cut into squares. Marion's rendition of this style of pizza is dead on correct but it's not for everyone just like Chicago style isn't for everyone.
In general I like Marion's enough to go a couple times of year with family visiting from out of town but not enough to go regularly. Their pizzas and sandwiches are good but the food is a little overpriced (the occasional half off coupon makes it well worth it though) since the ingredients are fairly basic right down to the use of Hormel meat products.
As for service, I can only speak to the Kettering, Centerville Far Hills, and Oakwood locations. The service has always been very good but there's no home delivery and they do not use wait staff, there's only the person you give your food order and you pick up your own food order. So my grade should kind of have an asterisk.
The decor? Yes, it's dated and the photos of "stars" were taken when performers from the Kenley Players (a one time popular dinner club theater) would gather after their last performance of the evening. The photos kind of harken back to a better time for the Dayton area, that's how old the decor is. For myself, I don't care about decor when it come's to a restaurant; first the food has to be good and then I worry about...
Read moreI'm not sure what the rave is about this pizza restaurant. It does have a lot of space inside, so if you're gonna have larger gatherings, it would work well. The prices did seem fairly reasonably for a 9" pizza, but it tastes like gas station pizza..
I got a pepperoni and onion pizza that I really wish I would have taken a picture of. The pepperoni was good but the onions were little dehydrated pieces that look exactly like what comes on a White Castle slider. It tasted terrible because of that. I eat pizza all the time, from every restaurant out there it seems like, and I've never seen anybody do this with onions before. It is unbelievable to me that they would not use fresh vegetables and ingredients.
I asked the young man when placing my order if they had old world pepperoni and he had no clue what it even was. He then went and asked the gentleman that was cooking the pizzas if they had it and he said "I don't think so". Well, they have old world pep and that's what's on the pizzas. How can you not know what old world pepperoni is when you work at a pizza restaurant?
We chose to eat in and they give you the cardboard grease cut out that goes in the boxes to use as your plate. They also said no refills on the fountain pop. I don't think I would ever eat here again. And I would definitely never get any pizza other than pepperoni since their vegetables...
Read moreThree weeks ago I had my brother drive us to Trader Joes for some grocery shopping. After we were done I saw this pizza place and decided I wanted to try their pizza.
The parking lot was full and to me that was a good sign. Once we got in I noticed the place was spacious and deteriorating. Most of the people eating there were old people. The dining room felt like it had remained unchanged since they originally opened. Which must have been in the 70's or 80's. I'm guessing 70's. It was just very dated.
Looking over the prices I thought this place must be pretty good if they are charging $20 for a 12 inch pizza. Boy was I wrong. First I noticed that all the pizza sauce was from industrial cans of sauce. I'm not certain but I don't think the ingredients were fresh nor the pizza dough. I got a bacon and pepperoni with cheese. It was good but not great.
Overall the pizza was very overpriced and very underwhelming. It tasted like a sad pizza that only someone with the munchies (after smoking too many joints) would want to eat this slop. Our pizza took 20 minutes to make despite there being 6 people working in the small kitchen and that most chain pizza places can have a pizza ready in 10 minutes.
I won't be eating here again. It was good to try but that is it. Pizza made for old people who are sad at life and don't care for...
