El Molcajete Mexican Restaurant KW — Restaurant in Key West

Was visiting Key West for the third time in twelve months. Had seen this restaurant while walking by; the outside is unassuming and certainly does not give that tourist feeling. We jokingly said it gave “dive” impressions from the outside; but, in our experience, dives often have the best food, so we gave it a go. The inside was clean and stylish and the seating was prompt. The menu was varied with some really good options for dining and drinking. We ordered chicken/shrimp fajitas, seafood soup, a lengua taco (beef tongue), fresh guacamole with chips and salsa, and sodas. The food was freshly cooked, very tasty, and reasonably priced. I ordered the Al Pastor Sopes which were small and good, not great. Now my wife ordered the cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. They were delicious 😋. I ended up sharing some of hers after I ate my small Sopes. The service was mediocre. We tried to talk and make friends with the women attending us. But she was just doing her job and that was all she wanted. Being a tourist I would think a friendly attitude would bring us back into the restaurant. We are going to try other tacos elsewhere.

First time here, not much flavor in any of the dishes I tried. Salsa had a watery, slimy consistency and the guacamole was flat in flavor. Barely any cheese on the quesadilla and didn’t seem like anything was seasoned. No beer, it’s BYoB but they informed after the meal that they charge you a hefty fee to bring in beer or wine so that was the nail in the coffin.
