So on Sunday, my family and I made a little road trip to the Keys to spend some quality time together. We were eager to try the famous Key lime pie and stopped at a local store in the Keys to do so. What we encountered after that gave me a reality check. I've lived in this country for about 17 years now. I am proud to consider myself Colombian American and aspire to one day work to preserve our constitutional rights as an attorney. I vote, I pay my taxes, I work, and I go to college in a country that took my family and me in. Anyways, we walk into this store speaking Spanish because well we are latin. The manager of the store from the get-go gave us this condescending look, but we paid no mind. As we proceed to look at the menu, the manager stares at us and says "you forgot how to talk or what." Not only was it disrespectful, but the demeanor he posed and the way he spoke to us was full of hatred. You didn't even have to hear what he said to notice his disgust with us as he projected it through his eyes. We told him that he was extremely rude and there was no reason at all for him to come at us like that. He proceeded to say "okay, leave." and he walked away as another family entered the store. He greeted the family with a huge smile on his face, and you noted how his demeanor changed. The family that came in was caucasian, just like the manager. I typically do not like to get into controversial topics about racism and other social topics via Facebook, but I have to share my experienced because it shook me. It hurt like heck to feel disrespected because of the single fact that I am LATINA. It also showed me the reality of the current issues MY people are facing. I Love this country, and I urge everyone to stand up and preserve the American Dream, a dream that was created by immigrants through hard work and perseverance. This great country was created on the basis of freedom and equality for ALL, regardless of our skin color, cultural background, and religion. We should all be treated with respect and dignity.

Read moreA tip was added to my transaction without my consent. When I was in the transaction, the screen stopped at the tip screen for a moment, then quickly skipped past it. I thought this was odd, but a computer glitch maybe? I thought the total looked higher than just the key lime pie slice price I was expecting, but possibly it was a fee(the one in addition to their credit card processing fee). I should have asked, but there were other patrons, and I didn't want to cause a hold up. Thankfully, I asked for a receipt and saw that I was charged a "tip". Thinking maybe this was a service fee that they labeled as a tip? To be sure I reached out to Mattheessen's to ask if this was an automatic up charge, as I didn't see any signage. They said that they didn't have an up charge and that they don't know how it happened. They just kept stating that the tip can only be done from the customer side. I mentioned that it could be a computer glitch if it wasn't the employee who clicked a button, but it wasn't me(and frankly that's not right). Additional fee charge/ customer service: 0/5
To top it off, I has tried 4 or 5 key lime pie's while in the keys. This was my last favorite, so I am completely fine with missing a stop here on my next visit. Key lime pie: 2/5
(note that i wouldn't have made this review had it not been for being charged a tip I didn't consent to. The biggest kicker to this is that my standard is to tip, and generally it's 20% minimum, so if the employee would have just let me consent, they would still have received the same tip, and the business wouldn't have received...
Read moreMy husband and I were looking for something sweet. The door was open so we strolled in around 11. I looked at the sign on the door which said 419 duval street open till 12. I just happened to see 12 so it appeared they were still open esp. Since the door was open. The guy at the counter was kind of put out by us walking in so I checked my phone. Saw he was open still figured there was no problem. He was not nice at all during the whole transaction another couple walked in which irritated him more as we were sitting down and he said Im not trying to be rude but Im closed but he was thats the thing. When I told him what his sign said about being 12 he said oh it was other location and quickly took it from the door. He said we can stay till the other couple orders and leaves but we opted to leave I guess as a tourist I should know the difference between the two stores. This is the one by Mallory Square... whoever owns this establishment needs to get this guy customer service skills. He is rude as hell. Customer service is everything. My experience tonight will surely determine on whether I spend my hard earned money here again no matter...
