If I could give this place a 0 I would. I went to this shop with my mom and girlfriend around 4pm to buy some souvenirs. The lady at the shop was of Russian or Slavic decent. When we were checking out (it was only like a $15 transaction by the way), I handed her my credit card. She began questioning me about my last name and claimed it was because she needed to “confirm the last name”. She said I did not look like I had the last on the card. I was so stunned that someone else in my party answered, and she seemed content. What is most ridiculous to me is that she went through all that trouble and didn’t check my ID. If you are suspicious about someone just check their ID. Otherwise it seems like you are picking on certain people for how they look and discriminating against them. I will not return here based off of how ridiculous this experience was. I will tell my friends and family and other POC not to come either.
Also, as a side note, it seems as if the majority of the reviews this place has are because people have confused this shop with the “Mile 0” sign right outside that does not belong to them. Also the southern most point monument is beautiful but has nothing to do with this shop. I was confused as to why the rating was so high but I guess this is...
Read moreYou can take photos on either the left or right side, one side as you can see has the green mm and the black and white '1' sign, on the left side (across from church) you will find a little fun gift shop. Nice place for mile marker zero items, keep in mind it is a tourist gift shop so everything is going to be highly overpriced but you're are only going to find these novelty local items typically in Key West, so if you find something you love grab it! These local souvenirs in tourist gift shops are very hard to find once you leave the area, trust me I checked!!! I have yet to find one mile marker t-shirt once I left Key West, let alone online that was cheaper after you factor in shipping costs. I would definitely stay away from the gift shops that offer these or any shirts for $5 only, if you're going to get a shirt go for quality, once you wash these cheaper shirts, I can tell that it would come apart in an instant, I tugged at one of the $5 versions and the decal came apart like a wet sticker!
Oh! Make sure if you do decide to get a customized shirt (where you pick the decal and shirt) you get the price FIRST, these shirts will run about $40 for...
Read moreOf course you can get your picture taken here at this landmark, the southern end of US 1. This is located on Whitehead Street which by the way has a few interesting things on this street. But first right next to this landmark is the mile marker 0 store or gift shop. I have no problem with this being commercialized, it was very convenient as we stepped inside and bought a few items. Now on this street is also the Hemingway House, (already reviewed), the lighthouse museum, we didn't visit. A very distinctive tree not to far from mile 0. The southern terminus landmark on the opposite side at the end of Whitehead Street, which by the way people were standing in line to take a picture of and with loved ones. One interesting thing that happened when we were walking toward mile 0 was as we got by this tree we heard this flurry of activity as something rushed up the tree. No squrriel, it was a large green iguana lizard which we learned was now invasive in the keys and southern Florida. Couldn't get a pic as it was quick and had not noticed it while walking on the street. Check out these items and places of interest on...
