I went to check out Duke's, with my partner, after reading the mostly positive reviews to see if it was worthy. Oh yeah we took our dog as well. 🐕 😀 Let me start off by saying that Duke's is very clean. There are tables outside. The employees there were great. They were pleasant and welcoming. As for the menu options they are what you would expect from a burger joint. Burgers, Double Burgers, Fries, etc. I ordered a Double cheeses combo, a Double Burger, and 2 cokes. I also ordered a Patty for my dog. That came out to a WHOPPING $48+ DOLLARS! To say that I was Absolutely Floored would be an Understatement. Upon checking my receipt I noticed that I was charged OVER $8.00 for the dog Patty! Assuming that this was a mistake I went to speak to the manager. I asked him if I was charged correctly and if that Was the price of a single burger patty I was told "Yes, you were charged correctly. That's the right price. We don't care who's eating the burger" .......... WHAT'HE?! I Just Wanted a Single Patty! 😡 Let me say that the burgers we had Were HUGE! But they were a sloppy mess. The "grilled" onions were only slightly grilled so they were moist and stringy. This along with the lettuce, tomato, and pickles made the burger an unmanageable mess. You Can Not put this catastrophe of a burger down. What I mean to say is that it is such a chaotic mess that IF you put this slovenly, clumsy, awkward thing down you won't be able to pick it up again. We went through a dozen or more napkins, each, while trying to ingest it. The fries were warm and nothing special either. If you decide to go to Duke's do yourself a favor. Get a single burger or cheese burger and forget the fries. Also bring your own drink. Not only will your wallet thank you but you'll leave much more satisfied. As an aside? My dog only took 3 bites of her Patty before deciding that she'd had enough and she LOVES hamburger. I guess what I'm saying is if you're craving a Delicious Burger steer (pun intended 😉 ) clear of this joint. Go to Crazee Burger, Hodad's, Friendlies, or IN-N-OUT. You'll spend less and enjoy the meal a Whole Hell of a Lot More. ⚠️ You have...

I would rate this a 2.5 if possible. There are touches of positive that probably make it worth judging for yourself, but in all is not worth the cost. A burger and fries is a simple, working class meal that has turned into a designer item. Firstly, I lose respect for a burger restaurant that sells its burger and fries a la carte. I should be able to get a burger and fries for under $20 at a counter serve restaurant, even in 2023. Hard stop. Saying more about price, it is ridiculous that within the span of ~ a year, prices of the double burger (standard for most hungry adults) moved from $10.95 to $11.95, to $13.95, to $15.95 and now sits at $17.95 last I checked. That is utterly ridiculous, because if you want fries, that'll cost you at least $6 and change. The Spanish frieswith onion and jalapeño weren't terribly different in flavor from the regular cut (and $2 more). Even if they are enough for two people, the fries alone shouldn't cost more than an innout burger. The complaints about the cleanliness, bathrooms, and huge wall blocking the kitchen are justified. The milkshake and burger did deliver on taste, and both were flavorful. But in all, I paid $27 dollars for a double burger and milkshake with no extra modifications (my friends got different fries). That's without gratuity. That's obscene, and cannot reasonably return to pay that price. Don't see that business model surviving, especially without having a nice clean and...

I've been to Dukes several times since first discovering this gem in early 2023. I consider myself to be a food junkie and burgers are towards the top of my many favorites. I would easily consider Dukes to be a top 3 for best Burgers in San Diego. Once you pick up one of their behemoth burgers, you don't set it down till it's gone. They're that freaking delicious!! The caramelized onions, perfectly seasoned patty and extra thick bacon makes Dukes finger lickkng good. Another thing that has to be mentioned is the Chili cheese fries, OMG!! The first time I ever went to DUKES I got a classic Double bacon cheese burger and Chili cheese fries. When my food arrived I made the mistake of eating my chili cheese fries first, they were so good, I didn't stop till they were gone. Starting to feel the limits of my stomach approaching And a entire Double bacon cheese burger sitting before me, I thought I was defeated until I took that first bite. Addiction, addiction would be a good word to use for being able to understand how I was able to finish. Frank, thanks for getting the Chili under control. The past few times I went, the Chili was burnt and I just couldn't eat the fries with burnt chili. Today's visit the chili was phenomenal.

We decided to check out a new spot in La Mesa for dinner tonight, Duke's Old Fashioned Onion Burgers (formerly the Starbucks on Baltimore Dr. in front of the 99 Cent Store). This was easily a top 5 all-time burger for me, and I've had more than my fair share of hamburgers over the years. They use a different method of cooking the meat versus In-N-Out or White Castle when it comes to the onion incorporation. The patty eventually gets smashed into all those delicious carmelized onion strings when flipped on the flatop stove. I went with the Single Onion Burger ($8.95), and it appeared to be way bigger than described. Two people could definitely share this. I got everything on it including the jalapeños, and added bacon, which was a $1.99 upcharge (cheese is included in all burger prices.) The fries are the fresh skin-on variety, which we enjoyed with their Fiery Ketchup and ranch. And for you fries lovers, there are lots of innovation styles available. Most looked like meals of their own! Unfortunately we were so full, we couldn't try the dessert, the S'mores Quesadilla. All in all, I HIGHLY recommend this place. Duke's is a stand alone restaurant and a great addition to the La Mesa neighborhood.

This review is based off food for price and not customer service, customer service was amazing and wait isn't to bad, now that we have that out of the way let's start. First off let me tell you, you do get a 3.5% discount if you pay cash, pretty unique. Food is pricey... we live in California lets remember we have in and out around, I came in and purchased a double cheese burger and a side of regular fries (should've got parm) the total came out to around $27 after tax, pricey right? The burger was a pretty big size and the fries portion was also really good. But let's get something straight $20 for a burger it's gonna taste good.. WRONG!! In my opinion the burger lacked flavor, the fries were to well done and honestly could've also lacked flavor, the way they get the flavor with the burger is by adding Jalapeños, without adding that my double cheese burger with lettuce, pickles and onions had no taste what's so ever, I would recommend you look elsewhere, I know in and out burgers are no where near this size but I can get 3 doubles from them for the same price as I paid for one here and I can promise you I'd at least enjoy eating it...
