I would not waste my money at Stan's at this point. Firecakes, Something Sweet, and Do-Rite are all better and tastier and fresher options at this point.
I first went to Stan's in 2017 as tourist in Chicago. Their Donuts were great, they tasted fresh and home baked almost. Well, I moved to Chicago last summer (2021). A few weeks after moving here I got Stan's in Logan Sqaure. It tasted really different and not in a good way. It tasted like store bought Donuts that had been sitting out all day in the break room. It was later in the day and I thought maybe it was just a fluke.
I don't live near a Stan's, so I don't really go there often. I gave the one on Broadway in Lakeview a chance this morning. I had family in town and wanted to get some donuts for them. I went earlier in the morning around 8 o'clock. I tried to order a 1/2 dozen. I don't really blame the staff, but when I got to the register my total was much higher than I expected. I didn't realize that some donuts that are considered standard at other donut shops are considered "specialty" at Stan's. I made them put a couple of them back because I was not about to spend 25 bucks on 6 donuts and thank God. I took a couple bites of the donuts while waiting for the train and they tasted horrible. They tasted just like those store bought donuts that had been sitting out all day. They were chewy and gummy in texture. I honestly question whether or not they even bake them In the store. I would have been much better off just going to a Jewel or Marianos or (yikes even Dunkins) down the street for me. I ended up paying 15 bucks for 4 disgusting donuts. It is sad to see a brand that you like deteriorate in quality. I don't blame the staff. I felt bad that I had them put some of the donuts back because they were busy. Hopefully Stan's can get it together. If those are the donuts they are putting out in the morning for their rush hour business then they have definitely slipped in quality. I did order a chocolate chip cookie and that was good, but...
Read moreDO NOT GO HERE ANYMORE- THIS USED TO BE A GREAT LOCATION BUT HAS GONE COMPLETELY DOWN HILL!!! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! I am a regular here and have been a fan of this place for years. However, they recently underwent a change in management and have sadly ruined my favorite neighborhood coffee/breakfast spot. They added a bunch of random new rules and all of the new people seem to have bad attitudes compared to all of our usual workers. Did they clean house? My biggest complaint - though I understand may be irrelevant or even seem odd to some- is that they suddenly refuse to give you a full cup of cold brew.. seriously. For years I have been able to order a 32 oz cold brew to go as that is the largest size they offer. I prefer to get it without ice. If they had to start charging me for "no ice" (which they snarkily told me was the case for other establishments) I'd be a little annoyed but my ability to order my usual would not be disrupted. However- now they take my order happily- like always- charge me for 32 oz, then hand me a cup less than 2/3s full. At first I thought it must be a mistake.. or eventually I thought I was going crazy.... and I often times didn't have time to go back up to ask questions about it. Then finally one day I got to ask one of the GMs if I could order and receive the 32 oz option. She said no - that they will charge you for it but not fill it up all the way. I asked her how many oz of cold brew I could get if I paid for the 32oz option? She said she didn't know but could "look up the recipe"?? She went to the back for several minutes, holding up the line and acted cold towards me for trying to understand. I genuinely feel that I was respectful and even curious as opposed to rude at all. When she finally came back she told me "the recipe called for 18oz". 18? 18??!!!!!! I could not believe it was barely more than HALF OF WHAT I PAID FOR. When I tried to understand further she was helpless. Please let me order a full cup of cold brew or change your...
Read moreStan’s donuts are good. Stan’s coffee is decent. But the problem with Stan’s is this: their organizational management. For example, Standard Operating Procedures are employed in restaurants for quality control. Quality control does not only apply to food though. Standard operating procedures can also be applied to management. If one restaurant has a price for an item, and the exact same restaurant right down the street has that same item priced cheaper, wouldn’t you as a consumer ask why? At the Broadway Stan’s location, unlike all other Stan’s, you cannot accept an additional charge for no ice in cold brew. Instead, they simply serve you less and charge you full price. Now, I, the consumer have a predicament. If I wish to have more cold brew, then why can’t I pay for more and add it to this cup? Am I expected to order a second cup that is also half full? This would not only be silly, but it would also be wasteful. Thus making it shameful. If I were a manager or operator of this Stan’s, I would consider why my counterparts act and charge prices in such a way that I do not. What makes me so special? Am I special? Or, should I simply align myself to the needs of my consumers as well as the logic of my...
