The creation of the budlong was a great idea the Nashville hot is very delicious when done correctly. There is many issues with this concept of putting a spin on something while saying it is what that exact same thing. From New Orleans gumbo and crab boils to Memphis ribs. The minute a spin is put on it then it is not that such thing. Budlongs whether it is this location or all it presentation is great the flavor is not. The chicken even when it isn’t spicy is very bland. The chicken itself nor the batter was seasoned and I had the neutral chicken. Thinking my fiancé chicken would taste better because she had the hot version was not the case it was just hot bland chicken. Second we also had the Mac and cheese. This idea of Mac and cheese was just a lot of cheese with very little thought of Mac and cheese with good filling just noodles and cheese. We also had the collard greens at first I was giving good chops to the flavor but it seems the recipes just called for vinegar and boil the greens and call it collard. Then there was the banana pudding, it should have been called pudding with bananas in it. The whole idea was of budlong was the creator went to Nashville liked the chicken so much that he came back and spent a year creating a recipe and boom the chain came to be, well he fell very short of the Nashville taste. Places like these that want to give you a taste of a certain food from another area fall short consistently because they want to tweak it yet it taste worse than ever. One last fact we ordered a salad and didn’t want the chicken on there and they said the only way we can get the salad was we have to order it with the chicken on there we asked is this a premade salad they said no we said well don’t put the chicken on there which they have to cook they said we can’t do that we said we will pay the price of the salad with chicken on it just don’t put chicken on it they still couldn’t understand don’t put chicken on it so we bought the salad had to take the chicken off ourselves. Basically this place was terrible I took the chicken home and then seasoned it again with the Popeyes...

Read moreI’m going to start with the juiciest bit - the hot chicken sandwich is 🔥. I got exactly what I wanted: spicy, crispy chicken breast, sweet slaw, a sweet and sour slab of pickle, and a tasty bun that didn’t crumble and didn’t dominate my mouth with bread. But at $20 for a two piece meal, I’m left feeling just a little burned.
I ordered mac n cheese as a side, and as soon as I opened it I had my doubts. The macaroni is floating in a cheesy broth, more or less. There is a real watery aspect to the cheese sauce. I had to fish the pasta out. There’s no crust, no bite.
I decided to take my dinner to go. I was told about ten minutes, though I got my order in about two (not typical). I wish I had eaten on their terrace, it looked very relaxed. A nice vantage point from which to watch Western Ave.’s craziness zoom by. The interior frightens me though, it’s very high key and bright. It seems like the lighting and color scheme restaurants employ when they want customers to leave faster.
With 15% tip I paid $20 for a chicken sandwich and bad macaroni and cheese. That’s not ideal. I have to really be in the mood for that chicken to come back here. It’s good, but not that good. I can do better at Bad Apple for that price and I have a lot more options there.
This is a good chicken sandwich. I made mine normal but I think I might try for hot next time. Normal worked well for me, but I am a fan of spicy chicken. If you’re timid or have a sensitive stomach or palate, tread carefully. The pickles and slaw do a hell of a good job cooking that flavor down but it’s...
