Consume — Restaurant in Lake Zurich

A frankly disappointing experience - glasses had a residual soap flavor tainting the drinks and entrees were quite bland. The appetizers were the sole standout of the night.

The fried chicken sandwich sounded perfect on paper, but the sauce and accoutrements were bland while the chicken itself was overly flattened with about 30% of it consisting of only breading and portions of it being dry or tough to chew.

The entre came with fries and options for their preparation: salt & vinegar, truffle, and normal. Both my S&V ones and my companion's Truffle ones were the food dish equivalent of a LaCroix -- just a hint of seasoning wafted across them from the next room over.

The limited menu doesn't help things nor do the relatively high prices for the dishes on offer. I may try here again since my family seems to like the restaurant, but even they have remarked that the experience is quite variable...

I have a hard time praising Consume without sounding like a shill. The thing is that they do so many things right that it's always an excellent visit. Today we had a couple beers and apps. One of the beers was an interesting stout (Four Barrel) from Salt Lake City. Which paired very well with the falafel and corn fritters. We've had the fritters before. They are slightly sweet with a lightly spicy sauce. The falafel was crispy outside and tender inside. The sauce was quite a bit spicier than the fritter sauce, but a good match for the dish. The part that shows the really do know what they are doing and not just slapping food on a plate was the nice surprise of several large pickle slices. Before biting into one, I thought to myself that the perfect complement to the spicy sauce would be a homemade sweet pickle. YES! It was exactly that. The perfect accompaniment. Do yourself a favor and...

The service was good at first, we got our drinks and appetizers out fast. But our main courses took way too long to be served, the wait was definitely not worth the wait. We decided to try this place out because of the reviews, but boy are they misleading. The only thing we had that was good was the French fries. The macoroni, roasted potatoes, and chicken tenders we're okay, but were lacking major flavor. Same thing with the burger....it was also very char tasting, my boyfriend couldn't even finish half of it because of how bad it was. I don't know how this place has great reviews....the people who enjoyed the food must've been too drunk to care about the food. This is honestly something you would eat when your sick since its so bland. Also, we dropped by around 11am when it wasn't busy, just a few customers, so I'm confused as to why our order tool so long. I'd go back only...
