I’ve lived in lakeland 17+ years. for as long as i can remember, i've noticed britt's and have always heard about the friday fish fry. well shame on me for not visiting sooner and for coming in after 7 on a friday night when they close at 8 and you know they're ready to get home.
for some reason i was so excited. maybe b/c the week was over. maybe b/c it's almost easter. maybe it was the breeze in the air. maybe b/c i've been to many (wanna say most) lakeland restaurants over the years (good and bad) and felt like i was about to feast on some fantastic fried fish! Triple F what up!!!
turns out, our wondeful server, Christina, was more than happy to oblige, offering outdoor seating as the sun went down while husting multiple tables inside and out. it wasn't packed, but there were still 4 or 5 tables and she was busy. nevertheless she got our order, answered our questions, kept our drinks filled, and was all around happy to help knowing she probably wouldn't be leaving early. I wanted to be a good customer, try this fish, enjoy the evening with family, be respectful of the staff, and try not to take too long. Thy could not have been more accommodating. Everyone was at ease.
as for the food. it was great! i had the 4 piece regular fried fish struggling to fight off the urge for an all you can eat option (it was getting late). upgraded the fries to onions rings (holy cow!). tried my daughter’s fries and they were good, but the onion rings. So good! Cornbread was great. Have been making cornbread for years and it’s never been that good unless I add meat cheese veggies and then it’s really not cornbread anymore is it friend. I digress. Basic plain jane cornbread. Theirs is for real!
What else. Daughter had chicken tender sandwich which was hearty and fresh. The wife’s tuna salad on a house salad was right on as well. In particular, their tuna salad walked and talked serious flavor. Think grandma’s brother’s funeral reception with those little triangle cut babies alongside their cousins palmetto and chicken salad, crossed with some homemade fish spread you and the homies had at some legendary gulf coast river bar in cedar key, Homosassa, Bradenton, cortez, venice, you know what I’m saying. The tuna salad was going off, getting funky, making me jealous. Bravo Britt’s!
you know what can I say. I was stubborn. Maybe I heard they didn’t take credit cards (they do) or thought it might be bland (I’m not right), or worried about available tables (I’d sit with you and your family if it meant I’d get my order). who knows. Bottom line. I was so wrong. Britt’s is one of my new fav local stops in S Lakeland (shout out Sandwich Factory, Dona Julia's, Stadium Pizza, Bruster’s, Duke’s, RIP Howies, ya’ll know how we do)!
Do yourself a favor. Go grab some dinner one night. They close at 8 so get there in time. my neighbor said their breakfast is the same. For real. I can’t wait. That place is awesome. Whatever Britt’s and Christina have going on, it’s working. Thanks so much for a great 1st time at your café! We’ll most...
Read moreDecided to try a different breakfast place and wanted to try something other than IHOP. This place is surprisingly very small, has hard metal chairs & tables so not comfortable especially when you sit in the center, and is sandwiched with the Publix that is under construction (not their fault). I rated it 3 stars because the eggs were undercooked and not "over hard" which is what he wanted and instead were "over easy and oozing yolk" which disappointed my husband but he ate them anyway. If you are not going to make the eggs correctly why even ask? Also, I ordered 2 eggs which look more like one egg so I assume the eggs are small-sized eggs and not the large ones. So be aware of this so you won't be surprised like I was. The hash browns were not crispy and a remedy for this would be to lay the potatoes thinly over the oil and cook them more so that they are crispy or leave them in longer so the edges and center truly crisp up. It tended to come as soggy so that was another disappointment due to being a bit thick and not cooking to crispness which is what makes hash browns great to eat when it is cooked correctly. If he is going to make them thick common sense would be to cook them longer it's a bit more crispy and not soggy with just brown edges that aren't crisp but just a bit brown. The raisin bread was not crispy or warm either. On the plus side, the grits were very good with cheese on it and creamy. The coffee was good with standard Cremer nothing special. The sausage links were good. Overall 3 stars due to the above negative major issues which are not common in places that cater to breakfast fare as they are usually 5 stars for made-to-order eggs and American-style breakfast fare the way you want. Also, it's 2023, and offering a vegan sausage (not just turkey) for those that want to reduce fat would be advisable or are semi-vegetarian. People like this don't want just a "vegetable" dish. Even IHOP offers this. Next time will go to Kekes Breakfast Cafe and check them out. Hopefully, you all reading this will have better luck here...
Read moreWe decided to try out this spot this morning and were delightfully surprised. As former detention deputies and coming from military families, our jaws hit the floor with the amount of veteran, thin blue and red line, and religious art across every wall (even in the bathroom!). Then, unsure of what we wanted to try, our server, Christina, worked patiently with us to get a portion of everything we wanted to try. When our food arrived, everything was hot and exactly as ordered. We didn't even need to ask for drink refills as Christina grabbed them right up and brought them back to us within a minute. Most shocking and impressive? There were two tables of rude guests that literally rolled right down and off of the staff's backs! One table complained that they waited almost thirty minutes for their food even though inside and out were completely full. The other table complained complained when the staff told them (before they even sat down) that they were switching from breakfast to lunch and were unable to order breakfast. It was almost 11am by this point... However, every single staff member was professional in dealing with both tables and even wished the guests a great rest of their day when they left/ second table walked out. I don't know how Britt's pulls all of this off, but it restores my faith in humanity to see this when the world is full of hate, greed, and 'hurt feelings' . Britt's rightfully stands for and boasts what they believe in and doesn't cave to what is deemed 'politically correct' these days. Britt's, you have just earned yourselves repeat and excited customers. We will definitely tell everyone we know about you, your staff, and your dedication to a wonderful meal and great conversation. Oh, and Christina, as you explained to us that we are now family, our family at Britt's is...
