Let me just start by saying that I love the atmosphere and vibe of this place, it’s very chill and very cool. Wait staff is also quite friendly and attentive. That said, I was not impressed by the vast majority of their sushi. Most of it was mediocre at best, average quality fish in terms of nigiri/sashimi. The tuna was not great and had a noticeable fishy taste. Super white tuna was a hair better, but nothing to write home about. The hamachi was decent, but the octopus was a bit mehh, overtly chewy and flavorless.
The only saving grace on the sashimi platter was the salmon, which had noticeable white streaks of fat, and was delicate, flavorful, and free of any notes of fish flavor indicating it’s quality/freshness. I also tried the Tuna nigiri with fried rice, and was surprised that by fried rice what they really meant was nigiri fried in tempura batter. An interesting take for sure, but after the first bite the novelty wore off and the heaviness/lack of balance came forward which shows the reality that raw fish simply does not pair well with fried food when eaten in a single bite. My other biggest disappointment was the Miso soup, as an old trick is that you can always tell how good a sushi place is going to be by the quality of their miso and dashi stock. While the miso was beautiful, it was relatively flavorless, lacking umami and much of any punch with overt unpleasant earthy overtones.
So you’re probably wondering why I gave this place 4 stars when I just spent a whole paragraph explaining why the food was completely mediocre? Well, I really like the vibe here and they make some stellar cocktails and have a great drink menu with some interesting beers and sakes. I’m not sure if I’d come back to eat here again, because if the sushi isn’t good I’d be surprised if I’d be impressed by their ramen. If you’re used to specialty rolls and never eat real sushi (nigiri/sashimi), you’ll probably be fine here because all the deep fried nonsense and Mayo/sauces/veggies will likely cover up the average quality fish. But if you’re in the mood for sashimi or nigiri, I would go elsewhere. That said, I would absolutely come back here for a drink, the bar is dope and the...
Read moreMy experience was very enjoyable. My wife and I went during happy hour and it was a great idea. During their happy hour the appetizers and hamamaki sushi are half price. At those prices everything was certainly worth the price. I got unagi roll, lakewood roll, fried calmari, and the lobster nachos. The lobster nachos come with fried wantons with the sweet unagi sauce on the wantons. I could have just eaton the wontons. The dip was also amazing and very filling. The only complain on that item is that the wantons do tend to break in the dip BUT I will say that it is worth it as they are very tasty so I will take the more fragile "chip".
The fried calamari are surprisingly tender and not really chewy. The wasabi peas crushed on top do not make it spicy but it greatly changes the flavor on those pieces. You get a good amount of them and we had to take some home. Overall a very good dish.
Both of the sushi were very good and are much better than generic sushi at the supermarket. The ginger is also very nice. The only thing I would really want is that my eel, while very tasty, is my favorite and I just wish I could taste even more of the grilled flavor. If I got the other kinds of sushi with eel I probably would get more of that flavor but those were not on the happy hour.
Some things I would like to see would be more eel dishes (ok maybe that is just me but it is SO good) and/or perhaps a bento box idea. I think it would fit the theme and if priced well it could be a great happy hour option.
Happy hours makes this place very affordable so I highly recommend it during that time. Outside of that the food looked, sounded, and tasted very good but I would treat it as being a more high end sort of priced place (which you should expect sushi is not normally cheap). Go there, have some sushi, and sit at the sushi bar and watch them make the...
Read moreCame in to try their pad Thai that a friend recommended and was very disappointed-- didn't taste like traditional pad Thai and a little bland. My sister ordered ramen and it was very bland as well. What I did enjoy was their lobster nachos and sushi was okay. A bit on the pricier side. Sat at the bar and my group was going to order another round of drinks but the bartender was busy talking to someone at the bar. We ended up just leaving after paying our tab, which took forever to get.
UPDATE: Gave this place a second shot the other day, and was disappointed even more this time! We were sat in a table in the main dining area during happy hour. 4/7 of the items we ordered were happy hour items and should've been half off. When the bill came, we were charged full price for everything. When we brought this issue up to our waitress, she tells us that the happy hour deals were only for those sitting at the bar or the patio. It is uncommon for a place to have selective seating for happy hour-- she should have verbally communicated this to us. Most importantly, she could have sat us out in the patio since we were there during happy hour!! All we got was a shoulder shrug, a "yeah really sorry guys", and a bill 2x what we were expecting. Never coming back again,...
