I come to Colorado once a year for hiking. I've been doing this for the past 6-7 years, and every year I come to Leadville for High Mountain Pies. If my trip doesn't naturally pass near Leadville, I add it separately. This is literally the best pizza I have ever in my life, and the people who work here are just fantastic.
People are friendly and accommodating. Indoor seating is available in limited numbers, but the outdoor seating is set up extremely well, and dogs are allowed as well. Food prices are extremely reasonable for handmade pizza, and when it comes out, the crust is always perfectly crunchy without being overdone, the sauce combines perfectly with everything else, and the toppings taste like they are extremely high quality.
I've yet to have any kind of reason to send food back, and I've paid more for less at other restaurants. Water is provided in pitchers to get tons of that, local drink options are available as well, and the menu is very wide ranging.
Many of the negative reviews here are either about non-pizza items or takeout issues. First of all, this is called High Mountain Pies. I understand that simply serving other options without attention to detail is a problem, but a pizzeria doesn't deserve 1/5 because they served salty ribs. But that's just my two cents. Lastly, this may be the most popular restaurant in the entire city. Phone lines become busy, and orders pile up. Can the takeout wait here be over 2 hours? Yes, it can, but factor in the number of staff members they have and the time it takes to assemble and cook a pizza, and that time isn't so bad since you're still at home.
Overall, perhaps listen to lower reviews when ordering anything but a pizza/calzone, but that shouldn't be your goal. Order some pizza (Carnivore and Crocodile are extremely...
Read moreThis past Sunday we were driving through Colorado on our way from New York City to Southern California. Due to mudslides on I70, we had to take a detour, which took us through Leadville. After a long day of driving, we were hungry and googled pizza in the area. The search came up with High Mountain Pies.
Having lived in NYC almost all our lives, I can honestly say without any hesitation that the pizza at High Mountain Pies is the best pizza we have ever had. The crust was just prefect and the homemade sauce was other worldly. It was obvious the care they take in putting the best and freshest ingredients in their food. Even the dough is freshly made in the restaurant. The staff was super friendly and even accommodated our request to get the pizza faster than their normal wait time, knowing we were driving through. The prices are very reasonable as well. We had assumed the large pie would be around $30 but it was only $15.
We might make another trip to area just so we can have their pizza again. There is no pizza better and who would've thunk it that we needed to drive through...
