Ten Penny has always been our families traditional restaurant to visit for years, since they moved downtown from 10th. That is until now! NEVER going again! With family being in town we wanted to check out the “new & improved” version. Yeah, the inside is spiffied up with tons of neat sports merch and a TON of tables. That obviously the logo being stamped on each corner of was more important than their size (as in they’re small). That’s whatever though. There were much worse issues than the new tables. To start, the staff came off as the local young brats clique. They lacked training, respect and communication between each other. We walk in, and the guy at the door just points us to all the tables and tells us to pick one to sit at and that he can give us an infant seat then is interrupted by a coworker who explains that they are all broken. Which didn’t make sense since everything there is new. We pick a table to sit at (and notice how small the tables are) so with their okay we pushed 2 together. Next, a different employee came to ask for our drinks. At this point we hadn’t been given any menus and didn’t know what the options were. Their response when we explained that, “coke products” (in such an I don’t care kind of bratty attitude) that lead to them just bringing us a big stack of menus after we just told the greeter how many our party was expecting (4 & 1 infant). That’s where the lack of communication first shows. After reviewing this “new” menu (without a single picture) it appeared that really only the prices for everything changed by increasing at least $3-$6 with pretty much just some new starters and a few new entrees. From there after getting our food, the kids burger was slider itty bitty size & BURNT, AND the mashed potatoes tasted literally dirty/moldy. When we were finally asked how everything tasted we expressed our disappointment and were told by our server she was going to speak with the manager. After walking behind the beverage station, where the rest of the staff was standing together after another table also just complained, they all dispersed with very nasty facial expressions throwing their arms up (again as in an oh well don’t care kind of way). Our server returns and offers free desserts. To be cordial, we accepted. They then had to go into the kitchen to ask what the options were. When mind you, they were written on a lit up board by the front door. Which I assume just means that whoever wrote them didn’t communicate them. After letting our server know our decisions, only the cheesecake tasted fine. The cake was dry and flavorless as if it were days old, which just added to our disappointment. To finish, when we received the check to pay via card. That’s when we were told there’s a 3% charged just for card payment. With no ATM inside to pull out cash, so if you don’t see the tiny sign explaining that once you walk in then you’re inevitably screwed into being charged the fee. I don’t recommend believing any of the recent “good” reviews of this place. They are probably paid or related to because they’re just biased...
Read moreSALTY and LOUD. I had been to the old restaurant and was not a fan. It was dirty, outdated, and the food was gross. After the new owner took over, we made a trip in and it was decent. It was quiet inside and very clean. My husband And son said their food was good. I was less pleased with mine. I had some 'nachos' with chips, steak, and melted blue cheese. It was ALL salty. So salty I couldn't eat it. However, I still thought the place was worth trying again. Fast forward to tonight...
8/29/25 Went back again tonight. It was SO loud inside that we almost walked out. However, I had hyped it up and my inlaws wanted to stay. There was a private party going on in the middle of the restaurant and it was so loud we couldn't carry a conversation at our table. Then the music was loud on top of that. They did turn the music down upon request, but it only made it manageable. We went ahead and placed our order. It took almost 45 minutes to get our food. The server never seemed concerned about the wait. Luckily we had ordered apps. The potato skins were the biggest let-down. Giant potatoes, tasteless cheese, and just bacon in the middle. Also, they don't bring sour cream, but instead squeeze a teaspoon-worth across all the skins. Two people ordered French dips. By the time they made it to the table, the au jus had spilled all over the fries and buns to the point the buns were all wet and there was hardly au jus left for dipping. The roast beef was cut so thick, it was hard to chew...NOT French dip style roast beef. While my GF bun was excellent, my burger was nasty. It was extremely thick and just tasted like the chef dumped salt on it. The green beans had some sort of weird flavoring as well. Empty plates on the table and everyone done eating....server never came. We finally had to stop her an ask for boxes and our check. I still gave it two stars because I think the restaurant is modern and clean. Our server was very nice, she just wasn't thorough. My son also accidentally forgot to specify boneless wings. Once they came out (also shocking and the most horrendous bone-in wings I've ever seen) the server was quick to help me place the correct order and take our mistake back.
Will not be returning. Unfortunately, it just was not a pleasant or relaxing experience. It was actually quite stressful. They should not have been open to the public with that size of a private party and it clearly put the kitchen behind. Also, lay off...
Read moreWe've been here multiple times. This time was not the best experience of them all by a long shot. For appetizers I had the fried pickles which were a special and they were really good. My son ordered the stuffed mushrooms and they were good too. For his entree my son ordered the hot wings and he said they were really good and they always have been. Now for the not so good part. They had a harvest salad as a special for $9. It was not good. When it came out it was the size of a side salad. I had asked not to have the craisins on it. I wouldn't have classified it really as a salad because it had very little lettuce and it was mostly A LOT like A LOT of parmesan. The chicken was supposed to be grilled and it wasn't. I was actually kind of worried it wasn't fully cooked and it was bland not even salt and pepper no seasoning at all. It was clearly not grilled. I showed the waiter the amount of lettuce I had and he did try to make it right and brought out a plate of lettuce. The problem was the lettuce was old. Most of it was translucent and turning red. It wasn't crisp and I had had so much parmesan it was all I could taste. I was offered a discount to make up for it but honestly wish I had gotten a refund. I didn't eat much of it at all. It just wasn't good. I've had other really good experiences there and have had a salad there before. This was just not a good experience. For a bill that was $55 I would have expected fresher lettuce and a dinner salad particularly since it was on their sign as a special. That's the time to wow the customer so they feel like they got something special right? I was not wowed in a good way. I know it's known for it's burgers but I have to eat healthier for medical reasons and wanted to take my son out somewhere we used to love to go. It will be a long time until we go back. The $55 might have been worth it if I walked out of there feeling like I had a good meal. I did not. The waiter was awesome the ambiance was amazing. The food was a complete miss for me.
Note to kitchen staff salads are important to those who are trying to eat healthier, not an after thought. If you don't have fresh lettuce and it's clearly old tell the waiter you are out of salads. I would have tried to find something else.
The three stars are a compilation of the ratings because the other food was of decent caliber easily 4 to 5 stars. If I was just rating the salad it would have...
