Steak 'n Shake in North Carolina is amazing. This place is a disaster. The food was fine but upon paying the $6.54 bill with a $20 I was handed $4.60 change. I started to turn to leave a tip as I counted the change and immediately turned back to inform the clerk of the error. He then counted the till to see if it was indeed off by the $8.86 he shorted me. Because his till was only off by 76 cents, he declared that he must have given me the correct change and refused to fix it.
Dumbfounded, I asked if he remembered me giving him the $20 bill. He did. And do you see the $4.60 in my hand? He did. So what do you suppose happened to the rest of the money? Not his problem. I scanned the floor and even double checked my pockets to verify that I hadn't absentmindedly put the money away. But of course that wouldn't explain the $4.60. Also, my father in law was behind me and agreed that this was a simple mistake.
The manager refused to give me my change. According to him, because the till was only 76 cents off, I was wrong. And it didn't matter how ridiculous that statement was. At this point 4 other employees had joined the manger at the front counter and began calling us "stupid" because we couldn't understand their system. That upset me and I began to call the police. That resonated with the manager and he decided to give me $13. Still not the correct change for my bill, but whatever. He threw in another 50 cents. Why is this so complicated? I told him that NOW his till would certainly be off, and I left.
I have never caused a scene in a restaurant. I am extremely forgiving and tend to tip even when the service is bad. A few bucks change would not affect my life in any conceivable way, and I would certainly never lie to steal extra money from a restaurant. But the arrogant attitude and blind accusation from the manager insulted my integrity and intelligence. Read moreBeing from out of town, we have stopped here a few times while passing through the area. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. The staff is beyond rude & very, very slow. On one occasion, after finishing our meal, I stood and waited, and waited, and waited to pay our bill. No one came to the register, even though many employees saw me waiting. Finally, someone came, but, no explanation & no apology. Yesterday, we stopped in again. I told my wife that I hope I wouldn't have to wait so long to pay my bill, remembering the last time we were here. There were 2 people waiting to be seated when we entered the door. I saw at least 1 open booth & 1 vacant table. No one came to seat us. The people in front of us finally went & sat at the counter. Two different couples entered after us, but after waiting for at least 10 minutes with no action, they turned around & left. Finally, a person named Violet came to seat us. She barked, "Who's next?" No apology, no explanation for the wait, no smile. Just plain rude. Our food was good, but, again I had to wait forever to pay my bill. Read moreI have never had such poor customer service. My fiancé and I go in and sit down to eat. After finishing our food we ordered a large Dr Pepper to go and a large milkshake to go. Our server brought the Dr Pepper in a to go cup and told us they were making the shake and it would be out in a couple minutes. She brought it out in a non to go cup it was in one of their glasses in house then goes on to ask us if we still want it to go.....yes that’s what we asked and ordered. She then brings a SMALL cup to the table first of which there was no way the LARGE shake was going to fit. Secondly shouldn’t at the least the shake be taken back and they can fix their own mistake? I know it’s not a bid deal I can pour the shake into the styrofoam cup but what exactly are we paying for??? Long story short she had the i don’t care not my problem attitude and the male server who wanted to argue about getting a large styrofoam cup was absurd. I will never dine at this location again. Your attitudes and demeanor will not get you anywhere with that and the manager as well as district and or regional manager need to know about the very poor customer service at this location and address it.
