Late Summer 2024 Edit: Breakfast was good this morning! The service was great as usual.
Two things I would recommend: (1) the potato in the home fries should be of more consistent size. The larger pieces were under done and the smaller pieces over done. It looks cool, but so does dashing consistently cut pieces with a little parsley.
(2) Rather than double pattying the English muffin sandwich, get a higher quality patty. More is not always better.
Updating the food to 4.
2024 Edit: Winchell's strikes again! I got the country ham has special this morning on a work trip. I ordered my eggs over medium, which are served on top of toast, on top of the hash, with a side of gravy.
The eggs were cooked to a perfect over easy. Fine. I'll take it. The gravy was good.
The hash was not good at all. The pieces of country ham were the size of minced garlic, so really tiny, and not what I imagined. And the potatoes were inconsistent in size, so that the pieces didn't cook consistently and didn't have consistent texture.
The potatoes were undercooked and overall the hash had a greyish color, indicating it's been sitting out for a while uncovered. The potatoes should sit in water until they're ready to be used. Prep 101.
The service was good. The waiter asked me if I wanted a coffee to go, and picked up on that I was in a hurry.
2023 Edit: What a rollercoaster! I just had the best breakfast I've had all year. Definitely do try the Kentucky Eggs Benedict!
Edit: I return this year with an update, after having not been here in a year. This morning I was so excited to order the KY eggs benedict. It wasn't as good as in the past. I believe the chef cooked the english muffin face down on a grill, drying it more than toasting would. It also wasn't buttered. The result was a delicious sauce and quality ham served on top of something with the consistency of a roof shingle. Potatoes were over cooked and dry, as was the bacon. The side of sausage was no better than what you get at a McDonald's drive through, except, you guessed it, drier. The coffee was good, and the service was also good.
Amending my previous 5 star rating to a 3. My friends were disappointed in a breakfast I have hyped for some time now. I don't get to...
Read moreA late Sunday lunch brought Fat Man Reviews to Winchell's Restaurant & Bar in Lexington, KY. Winchell's is a family owned sports bar that offers standard pub grub and Southern favorites. The dishes are made fresh and sourced locally.
We started with the Pork Quesadillas. This comes with pulled pork, pepper jack, cheddar cheese in grilled flour tortilla. It is also served with sour cream and BBQ sauce. The tortilla is grilled about perfect, both cheeses were melted amazingly, and the pork had a wonderful, slightly sweet flavor. I do not believe it is smoked, but it was great nonetheless. The one knock I will give this dish is that the BBQ sauce arrived hot and did not add to the dish.
My fiancé tried the B.L.T. It comes with Apple wood bacon, lettuce tomato, on sourdough (white, wheat, rye also available), and fries. The bacon was think cut and cooked to a great crispy chewy bite, and the fries looked hand-cut and were fried pretty well. I have to say that the bread could have been toasted a bit longer, and the sandwich needed mayo. Other than that it was a really nice sandwich.
I had the Chicken Livers dinner, with mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese and country gravy on both the livers and potatoes. The livers were breaded and fried perfectly, not chewy or tough and had a creaminess about them. The potatoes were mashed and seasoned well, with some solid pieces of potatoes as well. The gravy was interesting, as it was a sausage gravy. It worked well with both dishes. The macaroni was a huge let down. The noodles were over-cooked and the sauce was grainy and not edible.
Winchell's Restaurant & Bar offers several appetizers, sandwiches, entrées and breakfast as well as a full bar. The service was good and they offer large portions. Winchell's Restaurant & Bar is Fat...
Read moreIf Wenchell's wasn't overshadowed by being a great sports bar to watch a UK game, it would still be known for its great food. I don't live in Lexington (or even near it), but frequently travel here for the combination of both. I don't think Wenchell's succeeds at being ranked among the top restaurants or as the best sports bar atmosphere. But it perfectly blends its strengths from both to create a terrific experience.
First, the restaurant aspect. The food really is good. The breakfast menu alone has earned this establishment notoriety as a popular destination. It's regular menu is also exceptional. In all my visits here, I've had one menu item that I didn't particularly care for. Everything else has been anywhere from good to great ... often great.
Second the sports bar aspect. I love coming here and being able to hang with a crowd that feels personal. I guess your experience at a bar is whatever you make of it, but the chain sports bars just feel too segregated from group to group for me. Here, it's not hard to blend right in with the rest of the bar crowd and feel like you're a part of them. The decor is nothing to brag about ... in fact it's one of the big strikes against it. But during a game, the atmosphere more than makes up for it. And again with the food ... what other bar has food options like this! Even the nachos are a notch way above any other bar I've been to.
Overall, a great place with great people. Their breakfast is an achievement by itself. The blending of a hometown sports bar atmosphere with an unexpectedly diverse and delicious menu makes this place a unique one you'll want to show off to...
