I was really looking forward to trying this place based on the reviews, but my first experience was disappointing.
I sat for about 30 minutes at the table right in front of the pickup counter and never heard my name called. Even if I somehow missed it once, it was never called again — and one of the bags sitting on the counter ended up being mine. That stood out, especially since I heard plenty of other names being called repeatedly.
I had also ordered a coffee, but there wasn’t one next to my bag — which could’ve been a clue something was off. When I asked about it, they made it then, which took another five minutes. Still, no apology or acknowledgment for the mix-up.
As for the food — the latte was lukewarm and not what I ordered (I asked for a hot peppermint latte). The bagels weren’t toasted, and after sitting so long, they were cold by the time I got home. I had added avocado to one, but it turned out to be smashed rather than sliced — would’ve been nice to know in advance. The meat portions were generous, but overall, the sandwiches lacked flavor; the eggs seemed unseasoned and possibly just egg whites.
We also received a mini muffin that came with the meal, but it was hard and clearly not fresh, so we tossed it. Granted, it was complimentary, but it didn’t inspire confidence in their pastries.
All in all, it was $25 on a coffee and two bagel sandwiches not well spent. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll give them another try, but my first visit definitely left a...
Read moreAs someone who grew up in New Jersey, I consider myself to be somewhat of a bagel aficionado. I've had a great many bagels throughout my lifetime. There is a perfect amount of cream cheese to bagel, a perfect ratio. You want enough cold cream cheese on a toasty warm bagel to create a pleasant juxtaposition in temperature and texture. I am so so disappointed that a place that calls itself a "bagel cafe" could ruin this balance. The toasted bagel costs $1.50, pretty standard for a bagel. However, adding cream cheese will run you a whole $2.50 extra, which is a pretty steep price for cream cheese altogether, especially when you consider that an entire block of the stuff costs about $1 at the Smith's. I ordered a bagel with cream cheese to go. The bagel was warm, and very delicious. No complaints about the bagel. However, I expect to get more than a teaspoon of cream cheese for $2.50. Seriously, just because this place is right next to the lab doesn't mean we have to measure the cream cheese in microns. Also, the cream cheese began to melt into the bagel by the time I opened it a few minutes later so any crispiness the bagel may have obtained from being toasted was gone. For $2.50 I expect at least a half inch of cream cheese between my bagel, ridiculous and overpriced. I will be buying my own cream cheese and applying it to my bagel in the future to avoid such a...
Read moreFood has been pretty good the few times I've been here. However the prices are a bit high. Also the young staff are extremely rude and unfriendly. The few times that I've been here I've tried smiling and being friendly to not only the person working the register but the staff at the pick up window and all three times they were unfriendly and looked extremely miserable. I've worked about 20 plus years in the customer service food industry so I know that it is hard stressful work at times mainly because of rude unfriendly customers. So I try to be as friendly as possible when I'm dealing with any food service workers. However I do know what type of customer service is expected from you when you are the food service employee. And the customer service at Ruby K definitely has alot of room for improvement. Hopefully this message/review gets to management/owner(s) and hopefully they address these issues with their staff. You can have delicious food, but it you don't have good customer service at the end of the day customers are going to start going...
