Located at the top floor of Hollywood Highland, this causal dining experience offers a variety of Japanese food choices and a great view of the Hollywood skyline. It is convenient to El Capitan Theatre, Jimmy Kimmel Live and of course, along the path of Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The restaurant is decorated with many items representing Japanese culture and displays of various sake. There is a wonderful display of lanterns at entrance, dining tables line the wall.
Every item on display here is for sale, the work created by local artists, so you will see something different each time. At time of my visit, there were a number of hand painted vases, hand make kimono, statues of warriors and a beautiful zen shrine with teak screens, silk paintings, flowers, candles that surrounded a meditating Buddha statue and a happy buddha,
Their menu is quite extensive, and includes tempura, teriyaki, gyoza, donburi, sashimi, California rolls, sushi and shabu shabu. They offer a wine and beer list, and you may order sake or other cocktails. I quite enjoyed the plum wine, which was not too sweet, and complimented the avocado salad and Rainbow Roll I chose
The environment here is relaxed, and the food quite delicious! It can get busy around key meal times, so I recommend a reservation for lunch or evenings, but most other times, walks ins can be accommodated. You may use Open Table or call them for reservation.
Overall a very pleasant experience, prices are comparable to other restaurants offering he same or similar menu in the area. Great relaxing ambiance.
As I like to see certain movies at El Capitan, I am sure that i will visit here again; work my way down the menu to try items that looked and sounded delicious! Shabu Shabu looked like an interesting experience --

And I must say I’m absolutely shocked by some of the reviews here, and I’m thinking that some things about the staff was a matter of cultural differences. Our waitress today was a delight, she wasn’t the best at speaking English but she definitely understood us 100% - so yes you may not get a conversation out of the wait staff but once again this wasn’t an American restaurant. The genuine sparkle in our waitress’s eyes when we complimented the staff transcends any language barrier.
I came in today wheelchair bound, the only minor issues we had were caused by other guests. My group was seated within minutes.
Our group ordered Two orders of Tonkatsu Ramen, karaage chicken, the A5 Kobe beef nigiri, and a sushi roll I can’t remember off the top of my head, everything was absolutely delicious.
Was it a little pricey? Yeah. But also between the quality and the fact that it’s literally on Hollywood blvd right next to the Dolby Theatre and etc. Like genuinely I do not what people would expect there, but also it was worth every cent.
My friend, whom had the karaage, said it was literally the best chicken he...
Read moreI'm honestly surprised by all the negative reviews, I actually loved this place. I'm extremely picky when it comes to anything sushi/sashimi too. My 7 year old daughter is worse, a picky eater in general, and she absolutely loved her miso soup and chicken yakisoba. Our mochi was spot on. My daughter's food came out quickly, mine soon followed. I thought the portions were generous. I'm a big guy and left happily full. We took our sweet time and our waiter Tom just kept bringing us refills. I really appreciated his patience with my daughters questions in ordering her food. My sushi B was excellent, chefs choice and what great choices he made. My sushi had great texture, temp, and taste. Roll was great. The ambiance was great, I saw a really nice mixture of couples, friends, family, people at the bar, all seated appropriately. I really don't get the negative reviews! I guess you can't really take a reviewer seriously when they don't even bother to take pictures. It was clean, everyone seemed to be having a good time, enjoying themselves. I felt the pricing was appropriate. See my receipt and you can decide for yourself. I recommend...
