Locally great, globally a little above mid. Objectively good, just not my favorite sandwich.
I’ve dreamed of buying an Italian sub on this block of York for years, watching every new spot as they open and hoping for a sandwich I can walk to. I was beyond stoked to see Ggiata coming in.
Impressive opening day crowd kept me away at lunch so I stopped by in the afternoon to no line. 10ish (very kind) people mostly standing around on staff but the sandwich still took like 15 mins to make for takeout. Fine but confusing, I can order ahead next time.
The Classic Italian internals were good. I needed more acid (vinegar) and my lettuce was meh but adequate. Good meats, the tomatoes mostly outside the sandwich and melding with the paper was weird, and the aioli was a nice touch but didn’t cover the need for more wet and zip.
The baguette is good quality craftsmanship but not to my tastes, and the sesame seed flavor dominated every bite: not what I want to be thinking about instead of delicious deli meats and the rest of the sandwich. Just my opinion, good execution though and I’m sure plenty love it.
I’ll be back, probably a lot, because I’m too lazy to walk down to Galco’s (bomb secret deli in the back) or drive 10 mins to The Heights in Cypress, Mario’s in Glendale, or Eagle Rock Italian as often as I want a sandwich. Tbh they and Ggiata all leave one wanting in different ways, but I’m glad to have this one in the local circuit.
Ggiata fills a massive void, but still leaves my itch to be scratched. I’m excited to see how the breakfasts and other sammies shape up, and to eat way too many of these sandwiches while my kid runs around the park.
(For reference, my platonic ideal sandwich is the Spicy NY Italian from Thundercloud Subs in Austin, TX. If you’re into that and Thundercloud’s casual counter style interaction, you’ll find truth in my...
Read moreEdited review: I've become obsessed with the Kale salad, and it is excellent. So I will move it to 4 stars. Original review below:
Want to start the review by saying that the service and atmosphere are good. All the people working at Ggiata are really great. But after many visits, I have to admit, I find the sandwiches to be just 'ok' overall.
-Egg and bacon sandwich on bagel - 6/10. Bagel was a bit burnt, it was good but nothing special. Belle's across the street or Bubs is better.
-Chicken Caesar Wrap - 7/10. First time I got unlucky, but WAY too salty. Like what on earth. Maybe too much parmesan cheese on my batch? Second time---pretty good, more balanced and less salty.
-The Turk - 7.5/10. Solid. Bread is the weak point. Good sandwich, but not sublime. Same filler with bub's bread would really knock it out of the park.
-The Spicy P - 7/10. Fine. Just again. Sort of mid. Tastes like chicken parm on decent bread.
-Tuna - 6/10 - Bro I do like adding a bunch to my tuna, but the batch I had was so intense with pepperoncini flavor I...
Read moreHad read about this place in the Times. So was very excited to try the deli & it did not disappoint. Outside of New York or Italy, this is the best sandwich I've eaten in years. Let's start with the bread... it is delicious. Our counter person told us that is delivered fresh daily by the bakery. & it tastes that way. Chewy & hearty. I had the Italian Sandwich, which had just the right about of kick with the peppercinis & the assortment of Italian cold cuts. My friend had a chicken sandwich, the Draper, that he raved about as well.. I tasted a bit of his chicken & it was tender & flavorful. The sandwich was large enough that it gave me 2 meals. The service was friendly. Can't wait to return.
Street,...
