If you were asked, "What are the two best things in Japanese cuisine?" how would you answer? Japanese food is incredibly good--miso soup, pickled ginger, Chinese seaweed, tempura, even the California roll (which you can't find in Japan), and ramen (which Japanese people consider a Chinese dish). Everything is delicious; I can't even name a single dish that isn't good. But what are the two best? In my opinion, they must be sea urchin and bluefin tuna toro.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to enjoy sea urchin or quality bluefin tuna toro during my New Year's Eve dinner at Here Fishy Fishy. First, they didn't have sea urchin that night. Second, while they did serve bluefin tuna, it wasn't toro. In fact, none of their dishes contained bluefin tuna toro, even though some items were labeled as "toro" they clearly weren't bluefin.
I have to say, the food was worth the price for the AYCE at $54.99. They offered some items exclusive to the $54.99 AYCE, but these could only be ordered once. Naturally, we tried a round of everything from the exclusive items, though there was no sea urchin that day. Let's take a closer look.
SCREAMING ORGASM 3/5 Seared Fatty Bluefin Tuna Sashimi with Screaming Sauce Too fatty. It was seared but served cold, which made the food even fattier. The taste was strange, though the flavor was okay. By the way, why is it called Screaming Sauce? I don't get it; the sauce was so flat and mild.
ORANGE SALMON 2/5 Salmon Sashimi with Orange Ponzu Sauce The flavor diminished the freshness of the salmon. It was acceptable but not surprising.
BLUEFIN TUNA POKE 4/5 Red Onion, Seaweed Salad, and Furikake, Sesame Oil It tasted good. The tuna dices paired well with the Chinese seaweed, and the seasoning was well-balanced.
DOUBLE TROUBLE 0/5 Minced Toro Sushi with Black Truffle Salt and Kizami Wasabi The texture was horrible--it made me think it was sous vide beef. Later, I checked the menu and realized it was supposed to be toro, some fish's toro. Why ruin fish like this?
SPIDER MAN 5+/5 Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab with Carrot Purée Excellent, one of the best soft shell crabs I've ever had. The carrot purée didn't taste like carrot, but it didn't matter. The frying technique was exceptional, and the sauce was delicious.
AWABI 5/5 Butter Seared Abalone Sashimi with Kizami Wasabi Very good. The abalone was incredibly tender, which is not easy to achieve.
IKURA 5/5 Salmon Roe Sushi Very good. The seaweed wrap was crispy--a must for gunkan sushi. The salmon roe was also very fresh.
AMA EBI 5/5 Sweet Shrimp with Smelt Eggs • No Rice Good. It tasted sweet.
HARASU 3/5 Salmon Belly Sushi with Kizami Wasabi It was okay, but I've had better.
TORO 2/5 Tuna Belly Sushi with Kizami Wasabi Okay, you might trick someone into thinking it's tuna toro, but it's obviously not bluefin tuna toro. Even the color was noticeably different from bluefin tuna toro.
HOTATE 5/5 Jumbo Scallop Sashimi with Kizami Wasabi and Smelt Eggs Very good-fresh, soft, juicy, and tender.
HIRAME 3/5 Halibut Sushi with Yuzu Kosho Paste In the past, fresh halibut was hard to come by, but nowadays it's easy. However, live farmed halibut is different from wild-caught halibut.
OTHER GOOD THINGS 999+/5 The rice in all the sushi was served in small portions, which is rare for AYCE sushi. Most AYCE sushi relies on rice to fill you up, but not here. Trust me, it's worth the price, even though there were areas for improvement. For example, they served the wrong items several times. Once, they even served us something incorrectly, took it back, and then served it to another table.
Anyway, the food tasted good, and the price was excellent. I will definitely be back.
By the way, it wasn't crowded even on New Year's Eve. I don't think the restaurant is the issue-I think it's a reflection of the economic situation in the...
Read moreI recently visited your sushi bar with a group of friends and had a very disappointing and upsetting experience due to unprofessional and disrespectful behavior from one of your waiters.
I ordered a sushi dish called Baked Lobster, which I specifically come to your restaurant for. However, the waiter brought me Baked Salmon instead. When I calmly pointed out the mistake, instead of acknowledging it or offering to fix the order, the waiter began arguing with me at length, insisting that I had ordered the wrong dish. He criticized my English and even implied that I was lying. I found this not only unprofessional but also humiliating and discriminatory.
My friends were present and clearly heard me order Baked Lobster. They are witnesses to the fact that I did not make a mistake. It was the waiter’s error — and yet he made every effort to place the blame on me.
To make matters worse, he also forgot to bring one of the dishes ordered by my friends, but included it on the final check. No apology was offered for this oversight either. It is unacceptable to deliver incorrect items, forget an order, and then attempt to charge for it — all while treating the customer disrespectfully.
He also claimed that I and my friends always “cause problems” for him, without giving any reason. I brought around 8 friends to your restaurant, and none of us will return because of this unacceptable behavior. While some of your staff are professional and courteous, unfortunately others clearly lack the basic understanding of how to work in customer service.
In addition to this waiter (photo attached), there is a female Asian waitress who is consistently rude, never smiles, and recently refused my polite request for a to-go box in a disrespectful tone. Neither of these two employees offered any apology. Ironically, the only people who did apologize were a young male Asian waiter who wasn’t even serving us, and the hostess at the front entrance — both of whom were very kind and professional.
Sadly, this is not the first time this has happened. Around three weeks ago, the same waiter also brought me the wrong order and again blamed me instead of acknowledging the mistake.
What makes it even more frustrating is that none of the waiters wear name badges, so it’s impossible to identify them by name. This lack of accountability only adds to the problem.
I used to visit your restaurant weekly and always recommended it to friends because the food is excellent. But after being treated with such disrespect multiple times, I no longer feel welcome or valued as a customer.
I sincerely hope that management takes this feedback seriously and takes immediate steps to improve service standards and ensure all guests are treated with respect, regardless of language...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place as I saw it on Rockstar eater on YouTube. Yes they do have premium sushi here and it was good but it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Not only that but they had run outs of some of the premium sushi which is why I came here. The food was good but I wouldn't say it's excellent and it definitely is not the best all I can eat option that's in the city. I would rank it number two behind Sushi 818 in Glendale. It definitely is better than most all you can eat sushi places. They did forget a few of the items that I ordered and I had to remind them so they would serve it to me.
The location of the place is very central but it is in such a bad area that you feel unsafe walking around. When I finished my meal there were two homeless people fighting right outside the restaurant. So if you're going alone You may want to take that into account.
Would I ever come back here again? Probably not. I can't fault them because of the things that happen outside of the restaurant but I definitely would not chance it and go back. On the premium orders you only get one piece. I wish they would have the option to pay more money for the premium buffet so you can order a lot more of the premium pieces. When I watched the video on YouTube, It seems like they just gave the YouTuber a lot better choices and more food than what you would get with the premium all you can eat option.
If you are in the area and maybe within walking distance I could definitely say it's the best option in that area but I would rather go to other places instead of here.
Once again this is better than most places out there but for around the same price there is a better option.
Parking is free with validation and that's a good thing because it can get expensive...
