I never leave any reviews because, being a business owner, I have seen that word of mouth is more effective than questionable internet critiques (ie. buying reviews, keyboard ninjas, etc...). After dining at House of Pies tonight, I had to give praise where it's due. Haven't been back since 1997 (when I enjoyed their pecan pie and coffee), but always wanted to try their food. After driving by the restaurant for the past 27 years, finally had a chance to go back, and was so thankful that there was still a place that knew how to make a good patty melt (4/5 stars for the food because I wish the cheese was more melted, but that beef patty with the perfect amount of sauteed onions was great). The onion rings were the best I've tasted in LA., the chili was surprisingly better than other diners (not going to name any names, but clearly better than the other diners that still serve chili spaghetti), and to top it off, they even had apple pie with french vanilla and caramel (wasn't on menu, but provided after I asked if they had it)! After constantly being disappointed with the current state of restaurant food (over-priced, small portioned, tasteless, over-hyped, better than thou staff, etc...), House of Pie nearly made me drop a tear in assuring me that there is still a place in LA that serves reasonably priced tasty food with attentive staff. A true hidden gem...
Read moregrowing up in la i always thought i hated it . summer is literally my least favorite season especially when theres nowhere to swim besides the overcrowded beaches and the very few grimy swimming holes, and its literally summer 80% of the year here 🤦♀️ ugh! and yuck! i left without ever thinking id come back again but to my surprise, i returned to attend school in this dystopia. everything felt grim till one day i went to the los feliz theater across the way and spotted the house of pies sign spinning up in the sky. like a ufo beaming me in. suddenly everything felt good- seated at my favorite booth (third by the window from the front door) with a slice of that banana cream pie in front of me. a slice of pie so fluffy, so creamy, not too sweet, just......beautiful and simples. but house of pies isnt just a place to put ur spoon into a slice of heaven, its also a place thats held my solitude w the warmth of sun and moonlight caressing me thru that big window. it is a place where ive shared secrets between me, my confidant, and the little swarm of flies which buzz in circles in the middle of the room. always there, always listening attentively. house of pies gave me something to look forward to coming home from places much more enjoyable than los angeles. thank u house of...
Read moreThis was on my list of "Places to try" because it was on Food Network "Best Thing I Ever Ate" so I asked the waiter and he had no clue, so I googled it and found that David Arquette said the Country-Fried Steak is a must. Again I asked the waiter, he said the CFS was mediocre at best.
My wife had pointed out they have Monte Cristo, so I asked about that and he gave it 2 thumbs up. When it arrived, it was blackened, almost burnt, and compressed, the 3 slices of bread, meat and cheese were flatter than a single slice of bread. It has a taste to it my wife says reminded her of funnel cake.
Now normally I would've sent it back, but it took 25 minutes to get and we had tickets to the Greek in about an hour... So I ate it. For the record, a proper Monte Cristo should be fluffy and golden brown.
My wife had the Patty Melt and loved it, the onion rings were great and the Thousand Island, he charged $1.75 for a little ramekin, what nearly the best she's ever had.
After the concert we went back for an immediate second chance, to get pie, from the House of Pies. I got the strawberry cream, house specialty, and my wife said it tasted like strawberry Qwik. She has the Belgian waffle dessert and loved it.
Both visits, service was...
